Hi all,
just got back from a little cruise to Canberra and have noticed a loss of power.
Did the usual checks, spark plug colour, valve clearances and compression.
all lovely until I checked the compression on cylinder IV. I, II and III came up with 145psi but number IV sat at 90psi! A splash of oil and it shot up to 175psi!!!!
Rings methinks, but I think I might have a bit of a burned valve issue too.
Either way it's an engine out and strip job.
My question is to do with heads though.
I've heard (but I can't remember where) that the smaller-valved 1800 heads when fitted to 2 litre pots can deliver more torque! I'm not looking for speed but I am looking for hill climbing torque to negotiate the Adelaide Hilly Bits.
While I'm having to do a rebuild I'd like to explore my torque improvement options.
Any advice?? ....................... Brookie?
Yes you are right about heads-
1800 heads had the largest standard valves and it is also becoming normal
when rebuilding an 1800 to go for 2 litre barrels and pistons with 1800 heads.
Definitely more pulling power and 2 litre barrels and pistons are easier to get.
Lower in forum you will see parts suppliers so you should be able to get a couple of quotes.
I have just bought 1800 heads-genuine Euro- for $520 each- to rebuild an 1800 motor I have. It will also have 2 litre barrels.

Hi Ray, for a Bus, you do need a lot of torque. The 1.8 Bus head actually had larger valves than either the 1.7 or the 2.0 Bus. The only Type 4 with larger valves was the 914 2.0.
As for making more power, the key in making more power with a Type 4 is in the camshaft and in the exhaust.
Go to a 2.0, get a mild camshaft (not too wild, as the engine is pushing a Bus, not a lightweight Bug) and a nice header/QP exhaust, and you'll have an engine.
You can learn more about the cylinder heads here from my site:
Hey there Tuna! (...Tom?) I just noticed that your site is one that I have referenced before, and is on my bookmarks list... great to see you post here, and welcome!
