I checked and the shock mounts are at least 4" inboard or nearer the front. These must be some kind of strengthener for these bays which have no center mount for the transaxle.
Here is the OG picture from a 68 SC
And one from my 3.8 V-6 1968 Stretch.
Other side
And finally one from Roadcow a 1971 Westy with a Toyota 3Tc engine.
Hard to see that last one but it's there.

73s have them- saw one with red and one with black. Should have 4
but will operate without them.
Not mechanical but attaches to moving part
