IRS is short for 'Independent Rear Suspension" which means each rear wheel can move up and down on the road without effecting the rear wheel on the other side of the vehicle. Result is more stable road holding and a more comfy ride.
Beam is the term for the housing on the front of a VW which houses the torsion (spelling?) bars which are the spring arrangement for the front of your VW. If you look under the front of your VW. You will see two round steel tubes about 70mm in diametre running from side to side between the front wheels. One will be on top of the other and the suspension arms will be attached to the ends of the top and bottom beam. All sorts of tricks are done to VW beams to make the suspension height adjustable or the wheels closer together etc. |
I haven't checked this thread for a while, but just wanted to say thank you to you and Jamie for your kind explanations. Makes sense to me now!
BTW, split looks great, but go the DC!! _________________ 1974 Microbus LOLA

Hi All
Yeh Maharg i do love the COMMERCIALS They are so COOL
I have been attacking the ute with a couple of grinders lately and i say 2 as the 9" for the big quick cuts and the 4" for finish work. Here is some photos of the Donor i have been using for some parts and the Walk through Seat Frames. I painlessly drilled and cut them free, well not so PAINLESS there was a bit of Claret about.
As you can see in this next pics there was alot of drilling and Yes double it for each side.
Finally ready to go in, Almost.
Well next pics Cutting out the old seat frames.
Thanks Jamie _________________ HAVING FUN IS WHAT IT IS ABOUT

Hi All
Well here we go on cutting out the Old Seat Frames on the ute. I find the utes to be a bit tight in the back and i do like some room, and i need the walk through to suit my plans for this ONE DAY WILD UTE.
Before Grinder
After Grinder
After a fair bit of cutting and cleaning up you can finally try to fit things together.
What RUST Who said anything about RUST
Trust me, Its worse now than that picture. It was in the road so i cut it all of. Pics hopefully coming soon.
Thanks Jamie _________________ HAVING FUN IS WHAT IT IS ABOUT
