I haven't done one for a while but they must be very clean as years of body oils even off the cleanest hands must be removed.
Degrease a couple of times at least- wash with a natural soap or Sugar soap- clean in very hot water- then clean water residual with Mineral Turps.
Sand very gently with 600 to 800 paper-clean again.
Apply ESP ( Bunnings or good hardware store) which will even allow you to paint on glass then paint with a good spray pak- if you want white there is a stock line-which I will post later- that is used to touch up damage to whitegoods etc which is OK.
Otherwise get an auto paint supplier to make up spray cans for you in colour you want.
If you can get another Kombi wheel that would be way to go.
