I came across a new vacuum leak today, one that I had not ssen before.
I had my 2 litre 1976 twin carb in for a tune up as she was idling rough only to fix it the day before by finding the spade terminals on the coil were corroded and loose. She was running well after that but I was still booked in for a tune up and I wanted things checked before OLd Bar so I went ahead with it.
When she came back it appeared to have a flat spot on taking off from stopped, also changing gears subtly no power down low and wouldn't idle propely when cold......
I couldn't see anything obvious off and couldn't hear an airleak...anyway pretty disappointed how badly she was running post the tune up and took it back to the mechanic to ask him to check it again.....anyhoo he was away and I am working over the weekend so...wasn't going to be driving it that much....
Today on close inspection I noted that there were some perishing splits in the rubber elbow that goes from the idle air intake (Between the idle screw and idle mixture on the left carburettor) the one that has a metal tube going into the air intake (Has two rubber elbows.) Well one elbow was perished and had several cracks in it. I was thinking of the possibility of a vacuum leak but didn't really think of this as a "vacuum circuit" > only had insulation tape to make the seal and restarted the engine .....She roars , she idles ,,,,she is terrific,...
So a new vacuum leak, now Brookie where will I find those replacement elbows?
Mick Motors Brisbane, Stokers Siding NSW or most VW repairers.
See Recommended Repairers etc.
Had similar problem with rebuild- had oil everywhere and it was oil sucked from engine due to leaks at the T junction which also connects to brake booster. A hard pedal is one symptom but not always. A very good guy in SA helped solve problem which neither of us has seen before.
Replace all the elbows and T piece on both sides.
