Well I found out tonight that if you have the haxagonal bolt loosened up to do your timing & pull the rotor cap off..............a newbie can easily pull the dizzy up & out of the drive shaft  Embarassed

Another lesson learned. The whole dizzy shaft was turning without the engine rotating & if I rotated the engine, the dizzy wasn't turning...u get the idea.

At first I was thinking that a drive cog pin was broken or similar.

Do any of you your ignition timing at a bit more than 7.5 degrees ? I have been told by a VW mecahnic that he runs them at about 10 degrees.

Any thoughts on that idea from anyone that does their own timing?
Cheers.

If you are running a stock 05 dizzy I would go for 7.5º .This is of course with vacuum line disconnected
Once you get it pretty right you might want  to play slightly with timing light though you usually can't improve.

7.5 degrees is usually best as 10 degrees will give a little better performance, but idling and starting can be less than satisfactory.

This engine has the 009 dizzy & I have purchased a Pertronix 1847V electronic ignition for it.

Guess I will stick with the 7.5 until I learn more about these engines.

Cheers.

Thanks Brookie,

That substantiates what the mechanic advised, he did say to advance the timing a bit.

Then he said to just move the dizzy until it is idling the slowest it will without cutting out, then moved it back a tad.
