I'm currently looking into buying a 1600 1990 Brazilian Kombi in Guatemala.  I NEED HELP!

I have never owned an VW nor do I know anything about them.

What years are good?
What engine is good?
What to look for while looking at the bus?
Is it possible to buy the kombi in Guatemala and return to the States?
How much?
and anything else I may need to know!!!!
