After many months of indecision, looking at the various Kombi and VW sites, going to a few outings etc, I decided to get me one. Unbeknown to me, my brother, as pure coincidence was also looking. He, Markk, had found a '58 splitty and I'd found a '69 fasty.
While I did enjoy the fasty I kept getting drawn back to the Kombi's and had a good look around at some at the Whiteman Park classic car show. To top this off, Big Bear, a long time friend from softball, turns up at Alfred's one week with a Crew cab and then a few months later buys a splitty van.
Well, if he can have three, then surely I can have one!
I found one that I liked and agreed on a price subject to me selling my fastback. A shame but a sacrifice that was imposed by my wife and as the saying goes, "happy wife, happy life".
I had a bit of trouble moving the fastback and long story short saw MY Kombi on ebay a few weeks later. I eventually won it but it cost me an extra $1200 which i was hoping to use on tidying up the paint work.
Anyway. I'll try to post some pictures. If they don't work out you'll just have to come down to Alfred's and check it out.
So, the Kombi is an ex-Army 1978 microbus, 2 litre Auto with factory air and swivel seats. The previous owner had if from 1982.

Looks like a tidy bus, well done. I sold my 68 Fasty for my van and then bought it back a year later. _________________ My kombi isn't meant to be a rat, it was just love at first sight |

Hi "K",
What a beauty, WOW.
That is one piece of WOW kombi.
You have joined the the clan now and can look forward to some fantastic times.
Look after her and treasure her forever.
By the way, I have been reading some UK VW magazines and a bus like yours has just been featured on the cover.
And the prices in the UK would make you wince and are in UK pounds.
They are "buying in" Aussie, South Afrrican and Californian vans and buses and selling at +++ prices, as is, and offering to do a full renovation to your specs for again big pounds.
I saw one last week in the Newcastles (UK) area and the owner had spent £20,000.00 (pounds that is 2:1 to the aussie dollar), to do a rebuild etc.
Another lady told me she saw a nice van at £ 23,000.00
It makes me gulp !!
I'm so happy with my bus in Au $, in Perth.
Hope to see you at Alfreds
Alan ( Ruby Dear is at Auto Europe for a couple of more weeks until I am back)
I'll be back in Perth 4 July. _________________ Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life. |

Well kkombie, if you offered me that kind of dough I reckon i'd take it. Maybe then i could chase a crew cab. I wonder if I could tempt Big Bear away from his. _________________ The 'K' Factor - You know it's real! |

Hi Brian. The colour is Panama Brown which must be German for Orange The top section is Dakota Beige. Both colours are VW colours. I've seen quite a few Kombis with the orange and white which goes better with the white bumpers if you ask me.
it used to be Army Green and White and it still shows that on the rego papers. The previous owner bought it at an Army disposal auction and painted it this colour. There is still the tell tale bits of green around, like in the engine bay, but the interior was repainted orange too. I don't thimk they took the hood lining out to do it though.
I'd be interested in finding out what Army Regiment it belonged to. _________________ The 'K' Factor - You know it's real! |
