Why is my running oil temp nearly always around 120? I have a 1973 auto 1800. I have it regularly serviced by a good VW specialist. I have the tappets regularly adjusted and still I get the same readings. Recently I had an oil air flow cooler fitted. This made a slight difference but not a great deal. Any suggestions?

We had a 74 1800 that always ran around 120º and on hot days in WA up to 130º -even after complete rebuild it only changed by a couple of degrees.

If you can hold the dipstick-even if you have to swap hands it is not overhot.
When it is too hot the red light will come on.

It also depends where the temperature is taken as it varies around crankcase.
Make sure all tinware is in place- foam seal complete- tinware painted black
heater booster tubes in place or blocked off.
With the distance you cover with the trailer on it must be OK

a couple more thing to consider. use unleaded fuel, not premium, leaded fuel burned even colder! retard the timing slightly, advanced timing causes hot running, change the spark plugs, i cannt remember the codes but buy a colder burning plug!

...and worry more about a sudden change in temperature. The calibration of your gauge might be a little off. I'd also look at doing at least some of Tagoff's tips - especially the spark plugs.

Hi!

I recently fitted an oil temp sensor dip stick and a VDO just to see how hot my oil was getting. Yesterday I took it for a drive and under heavy load (going up hills at 70 to 80 kph) or at cruise speed 90 to 100 kph she was reading a steady 122 degrees C.
Under normal around-town driving she was reading a steady 110 degrees C. The "TARDIS" is a 2L auto camper with recently rebuilt engine.
Are these temps about what I should be expecting?
