I've always believed in recycling. One mans trash is another mans treasure etc. It was no different when I wanted a Kombi. i couldn't afford a nice shiny showroom job so I searched the net for an old bomb. I found it. It was advertised for wrecking only. I paid the grand total of $500 for it and it actually was able to be driven home...JUST! I then bought a Kombi wreck that had had a front end collision and was a write off. The engine looked ok, so I put the engine from the wreck into my recycled Kombi and that was how I began my 3 year journey of fixing up my Kombi! The journey continues... Smile

That is a great story... of course we want to hear more....

My partner Alice also bought a $500 kombi recently - it's a good solid camper, but it has a few problems... it's going to cost a lot more than the purchase price to get it back on the road (and even more to get it to a "comfortable" state), but hey we love them...

Been reading on other forums how much it is costing people to restore their Kombi.
I know how long is a piece of string............... and feel many are frightened off buying or even attempting to do restore with costs quoted.
Unless you are doing a show car you don't need a bare metal respray- even if you have rust,this can be cut out, a good painter needs a good base and the orginal Kombi primer was of excellent quality.
Preparation and priming of course is necessary.
As much as I love Pobjoy motors you don't need one to have a reliable camper or daily driver. 1600 motors can be bought new and fitted for under $2500- you may have to service your dizzy, carb etc but it all can be done sensibly.
1700, 1800 and 2000cc motors are extremely strong and barrel and pistons are still well under $1000 anywhere and can be bought much better than that.
1800 heads-possibly the best- though you may get told you can't get them anymore are still available around $1200 a pair complete.

Remember most parts for engines are alloy or magnesium and freight or postage is not that expensive even from Europe.
These prices are pre recent credit crunch but all currencies are in same relative exchange rate and in most case Australia in in front.
Our Recommended Repairers etc have some good contact and in Links there are quite a few European suppliers.

In hindsight I with what I know now, (or rather people I know of now Laughing

) I would rather have got an old one and tidied it up a bit. having a pristine anything is not in my nature and i am actually looking forward to 5 years time when klaus is a bit worn and faded Very Happy
