hi all, im looking at puting an oil temp gauge in my kombi , have looked at some , but dont know which one ? someone told me that you can get one that goes down the dip stick , also can you get one that jst fits where the sump plug goes , or do you have to drill a hole , any surgestions would be good

I've the down the dip stick type.......then the wires just feed back through to the dash.
Seems ok, and always nice to have an idea of how quickly its heating up......there only good as a guage though i think, can't expect to acurate a reading!!

Woger has one of the VDO dipstick gauges. The readings appear higher than on other kombis (around 130 degs) - but I assume that is the inaccuracy of the gauge and not the oil temperature itself as the dipstick is never very hot. The important thing to watch for, anyway, is a sudden rise in temperature (which means "Stop now!").

The oil and engine temp varies a lot over the Kombi engine both Type 1 and Type 4.
The best temperature gauge is the original supplied by VW.
It is the red light!
It has two jobs to do-one it will tell you when oil level is unsafe and secondly if you have enough oil it will come on when it is too hot.
Leave for 20 minutes and it will be cool enough.
The next best is if you can hold dipstick in hand even if you have to swap it is OK.

The Kombi engine should not overheat if it is timed correctly , with correct dizzy, carb/s are tuned and not too lean , all tinware and foams seals are in place & be clean. Minor oil leaks attract dirt and this reduces cooling.
A quick wipe over engine, sump & tinware once a week is a good idea.

This is from long article on airflow on 993 Porsche

(Incidentally, one of the first cars ever to enter a wind tunnel for development work was the original VW Kombi. Initially it had separated flow all the way down the sides. So the front corners were radius'd until attached flow was achieved, dramatically lowering the Cd.)

The Cd is better than a Beetle-
You can check difference in airflow if you have Kombi with 1/4 vents on rear windows- do it on a warm day- Drive with them shut and then open-if you have temp gauge you will see difference.
