All this excitement with information on the Sierp Brothers conversions has caused me to sit down with the original documentation that came with my Camper.
The Warranty Voucher (booklet) tells me that the vehicle is a VOLKSWAGEN CAMPMOBILE Cruiser - Weekender.
The licence number was KZU 669 (Victorian)
Type/model No. 234ABYE
Chassis No. 2312160954
Engine No. AD209713
The Warranty started at delivery on 1/10/1971 and was for 6 months or 6,000 miles (10,000kms) or whatever came first.
There are two handbooks.
1. Instruction Manual - VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER August 1970
This, as you would expect, is a manual for the basic vehicle.
2. VOLKSWAGEN CAMPMOBILE Instruction Booklet. This is the manual that details the Camper parts of the whole thing and is of my exact fittings. (The only one I have seen like this!)
This booklet is not dated.
However, at the end it invites the owner to keep in contact with:-
Volkwagen Australia Pty. Ltd. Campmobile Technical Services, National Sales Office, PO Box 127, North RYDE, NSW, 2113.

Let's see.... the type/model (234) indicates a right-hand drive, left-hand cargo (sliding) door "kombi" (ie not a microbus with the trim/seats, or ute ambulance etc...)
The third digit in the chassis number (1) indicates a 1971.
The engine number (AD) indicates the kombi originally came with a 1600 engine.
The warranty (for 6 months/10,000 kms) is both relatively small (compared to the proven life of the kombi!) and surprisingly pessimistic...
I am always intrigued that there appears to be no camper companies in Melbourne - this means that before delivery the kombi would have been built in Melbourne, shipped to Adelaide for conversion, returned to Melbourne for intial rego then etc... musical chairs....
I assume the first manual is the Bentley... the second one sounds really intriguing - don't lose it!!!
(I'd be curious to see scans...) _________________ ....Woz

Hey Pirate,
Thanks for explaining the various codes on the Kombis, I never knew them.
My rebuilt engine is still the 1600 original, but with a big bore kit.
The six months is very short compared with modern warranties, but I never remember Dad ever having anything done under the warranty
Give me a bit of time and I'll try and scan the Campmobile Handbook. (Remember that I'm not so computer literate as you youngsters!)

I assume by "youngster"you mean "under 50"... (I'm still young...)
I would love to see the scan! (I have never seen the handbook! Actually - who has...???) Is it big? (I am very interested.... )
