hey guys. need some info if poss.
my kombi's steering is loose.. i turn the wheel and all of a sudden it jolts as if if loose..
whats occurring?? and can it be fixed ?

Below is link to pics of underside of bus-mainly to show brake booster but gives idea. Protection plate is removed.
Have someone rock steering while side to side and see if any play in linkages.
Look particularly at steering arm running forward which connects to steering box.
When steering is moved-wheels on ground- see if there is movement in ends or if rear end moves up and down.
Can do some pics if needed.

You may be describing the same problem I have just discovered on my 76 last week.
Had excessive play in the steering and would suddenly go really loose.
The boss/lock seemed loose, I figured that the locator screw was missing or loose at the point it attaches to the tab on the steering column.
When I stripped it down it turned out that the top 3 inches of the steering column had completey snapped off.
Thats as far as I have got so far, need to replace the steering column now.
