Wow, that grey colour of kombi family's looks great....
I've decided the time has come - I was going to wait until after I got the welding done, but at the prices charged for rustoleum, it will be affordable just to repaint afterwards...
I just rang Superior Coatings (Factory 6, 15 Nicole Close, Bayswater North - 03 9761 7331) and they still have tins of "navy grey" rustoleum for $60 a gallon.

I will also look for PPG roller part. No PPG 952-4961.
I hope to start on this early next week - of course, I will post up pics of my progress. _________________ ....Woz

The paint on my kombi is pretty glossy - I am still in two minds about spending the weekend stripping it... but I guess it will give me a good opportunity to check the metal (and the paint would possibly attach better to a cleaned surface). It is forecast to rain here next Thursday (and we can't fit Woger into the garage) - so if I strip the paint back, I will have to get new paint on quick!
Woger would look great rolling up to collect paint in bare metal!
Then I have to decide what I am going to do for a clear-coat, to give some extra shine - maybe rattle cans would be easiest? _________________ ....Woz

Yes, I am serious.
I am quite keen to strip several panels due to cracked bog and seeping rust.... the main issue is the lack of $$$ to get a proper spray-job afterwards - after waiting nearly two years to repaint the kombi (and getting no closer to saving the money), I think it is time to actually remove the bog and faded paint, so I can determine how much new metal will be required.... I could then respray it in rattle-can primer, but decided that the rustoleum would look better (and is no more expensive). I can always strip it again if/when I get Woger resprayed.
I am always open to better suggestions.... _________________ ....Woz

Make sure you use correct "bog" with paint- the old fashioned type and not "bog" for 2 pac.

I look forward to the pix...
I will start removing the bog next week (after I purchase the paint), including the thick layer across my sliding door (which looks quite unsightly, and seeps rust when it rains)... there is also bog under the side windows which I suspect is hiding something something quite nasty.... there also cracks around the holes next to the engine hatch.
I am less concerned about my kombi's looks than reliability (it has several shades of white anyway), but I suspect if done well the rustoleum will be a better option than just leaving things alone, and will probably look better than rattle-cans or brushes (although they can also look good). We will be looking for an engine rebuild, a carport or marquee to shelter the kombi, new shocks, trailer, winch, dash-mounted UHF, annexe etc over coming months/years, and they will have a higher priority money-wise than a fancy-looking paintjob (which may cost $6k or more) - hence my interest in cheaper alternatives.
Hey Col, I am curious though why you think the rustoleum such a bad idea - my understanding is that it will coat the metal and prevent moisture from getting underneath (and hence rust). When I stripped the sliding door of a section of thick bog a couple of years back, I sprayed the surface underneath with a couple of layers of etch-primer from a rattle-can, then spread a thin layer of "hairy bog" over the top to "even it" with the rest for the door, followed by more primer and rattle-can Antarctic white (which is supposedly the correct colour, but came out looking browner) - which in hindsight may not have been the best method... I wasn't worried about the mismatched shade, but water has somehow got through anyway....

woz at the end of the day , I was in the same position with having a realible car over something that looks flash,
The paint job i did looks great , and the money i have saved on a full respray , I can spend more on the motor and Brakes and interior and can happilly drive it anywhere and not be too worried about scratches
Even when you have the money for a full respray the rustoelum with come off with a sand blaster or media blaster ,
Just have fun with it whats the worst that could happen....
