Michael Jackson is dead, so the reports are at the moment all over tv and computer sites. He was a very good singer, even if he was a bit weird later in life.

I'm going to respond with a quote from my good friend's fakebook page:

"I wish we cared as much about the death of 4,500 children this hour from starvation as we do about the death of Michael Jackson. RIP to them all."

Also, as another friend pointed out... "I just can't get past several accusations of paedophillia for any music, no matter how much I may bop my head to it."

Yeah, I liked his music, but he didn't do much to make the world a better place, and he squandered all his money on frivilous pursuits of happiness. He could have done so much for so many of the world's starving.

Everyone to their own choice. We at least heard of MJ.

Also, as another friend pointed out... "I just can't get past several accusations of paedophillia for any music, no matter how much I may bop my head to it."

Still to be proven.

Was not his job to make the world a better place. His money to spend as he seen fit. Why should he  worry about the worlds starving? Do you, if so what are you doing about it.

I think that's a very NIMBY attitude to the poverty facing the majority of the world. I strongly believe it is everyone's job to help those in need, to whatever means they can.
Given my very limited resources, as compared to his obscene wealth, I'm actually doing quite a bit about it. The friend who I quoted is doing even more, he is working on the ground in these places, as well as in poor communities in our own country.
If I had Michael's Jackson's kind of money I wouldn't have built myself an entertainment park, that's for sure!!
It's unjust that the majority of the world's wealth lies in the hands of a very small minority.
Also, on the paedophillia thing, that attitude of "yet to be proven" is awful.
I have been sexually abused myself, I'd have a hard time proving it as only the perpetrator and I know it happened, and he's hardly likely to say "Oh yeah, I did that, throw me in jail"
Unfortunately our society too often believes the perpetrators of such crimes and judges the victims. I'm sure you would believe your own child if they made such a claim. Children very rarely just make that stuff up. They have to have been exposed to something very wrong to even know what they're talking about re: sex.

Also, to quote one of his songs directly...
"Heal the world, MAKE IT A BETTER PLACE, for you and for me, and the entire human race. There are people dying, if you care enough for the living, make it a better place for you and for me."

It's a real shame we don't hear more about the 4500 children dying each hour world wide from preventable starvation, that might just motivate people to do something about it.

It only seems unjust to those who don’t have money, but we are all capable of becoming rich it just takes the guts to set yourself up to fall. Those who do, have the probability of making it, those who don’t whinge about those who do.
Even if all those who have riches used their wealth to help all the starving, it would only make a small splash in the starvation pond. It would be better to amass the trillions of dollars spent on the war machine to combat the worlds hunger, but this is only a pipe dream as it would never happen.
Yes it’s sad to see popular people die but it’s sadder to see the millions starved and innocently maimed through conflict, may they all rest in peace.

I count myself among the minority who are wealthy, I'm not complaining about being poor. I have a roof over my head, I have clothing, I have food, I have a car... I am one of the wealthy minority in this world. If we're able to access this forum, we are wealthier than the majority of people in the world. I wouldn't agree that children in 3rd world countries have the capacity to make themselves rich though.
I agree with the point you make about the trillions of dollars wasted on war, but that wouldn't stop me from spending money on aid for those who are far worse off than me. Especially if I'd made heaps of money singing a song about making the world so much better...

It only needs someone to start the ball rolling, but we need to change the world’s culture.
A good example is Sugata Mitra (Google him) he started the "Hole in the Wall" project in India, where he set up computers in remote villages and with no adult supervision the children learnt how to use them from just trial and error and in the process learnt English and how to search the net with in hours of them being set-up.
These are the inspiring stories that we as the people of the world should use to re-educate ourselves to the fact that anyone can, with a little help, pull themselves out of poverty and be productive members of the world.

If people, business corporations, Governments and nations pulled together we could make changes that would benefit the world. Out there are young and not so young people who have a contribution to give the world, be it discovering new frontiers, curers for cancer or starvation or new vaccines etc. It only takes a small push to get that ball rolling, but getting that collective push is the hardest part.
We all have to change the, I can’t help or I don’t care attitude at home, and try and encourage the Australian “we’ll give it a go” way of thinking. We can do it, just look at how we all rally when the need is great, like disasters and bush fires, we all pitch in with whatever we can. We need to do this for those who need the most help the children of the world.
