Hi Conor,
You've got the fever, once you're back in the hills you can start looking and checking out.
Follow the advise of those before you. Look and ask and learn.
I'm in Forrestfield, so when you are back from the old country you are welcome to come and see Ruby Dear, and go for a drive. ('71 bay)
Love to meet you.
Maybe to Alfred's on the first Wed of November.
Give me a mail and I'll keep in touch.

We will get together soon.
Enjoy the search and research as much as you can.
You should be able to go to your local flea markets and hunt through the books and look out for models and toys.

Every one you look at you learn something new. That goes for all of us. Also the prices went silly a year or so back but my take is people have learned how much they cost to do up and prices have levelled ,so dont panic.[others may disagree]
I started looking a couple of years ago for my daughter and couldnd find anything near ready even around 7k. So I bought 2 that needed dings and some mechanicals but no rust in seams for around 1.5 k and did them up instead.
Since then there seems to be a lot coming out of the woodwork that have potential.
At 5 -5.5k you may find something running in reasonable nick but I would expect to have to spend another 5 k on it to have a fairly reliable tidy van . Thats assuming you do a fair bit of the work yourself.
But ,Yes. Looking is half the fun ,so have fun looking
cheers
