VW Club WA special general meeting.

The WA VW Club will hold a special general meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 1st October at John Hughes Volkswagen, Shepperton Road, corner of Rushton Street, Victoria Park.

The future of the club will be discussed. The Day of the Volkswagen is at risk.

I urge all club members to attend.

Thank you.

Richard.

President.
Brookie

This sounds VERY important.
Can non or perhaps prospective members attend?

------------------------------------------
Diddlie

If it's anything like our school P&C, getting numbers to attend can be hard.  We often have to have "informal discussions" rather than official meetings due to not having a quorum.
Piratekombi

So numbers might be a good idea? Involvement to save DOVW could be good for the WA VW Club, KK and the WA scene in general...?
Brookie

Yes -the last year has been great with VW Cub, NoH2o and KK participating in each others events and this should build a stronger VW "scene" in WA.

Like Diddlie says it is very hard to get Committee/organiser  participants in club/assocations etc and I feel more will have to be done online.

Piratekombi

I think it is important to use online methods to spread the word, feedback is quicker and it costs little (apart from typing time) to post widely... more involvement is good for any organisation.

DOVW is an important event, and more input and involvement (therefore more volunteers etc) will help ensure its survival.

It's a pity I am not in WA! I'd be jumping to be involved.... Smile
Brookie

You can always move- Smile

The VW Club of WA is over 50 years old and is one of the oldest continuing car clubs in Australia-.
I feel it is like most organisations & business's  that need the "net" to be viable and competitive.

These are some suggestions I have put forward

1. If I was involved in a properly constituted Club I would have the one formal meeting a year that is required by law- AGM . This is club that would  come under the umbrella of CAMS or CMC

2. Formal Committee Meetings would only be held when required- all Committee discussions to be online -email- or by phone.

3. Committee members be minimum and they have responsibility for certain  areas.
They would be responsible and could co-opt their own members.
Lions do this with their Club Directors and the Directors meet when
   needed.
4. A forum could be set up similar to KK.

5. Membership could be applied for online and payment made by direct deposit to bank account.

6. Webpage be updated and brought into 21st Century and kept up to
date.

Diddlie

Well, its on the first weds of the month so maybe alfreds could be moved....

Maybe if Richard could let us know a bit more, as Brookie mentioned is it members only, AGMS normally are, thats where you pay your subs to vote etc but any old tom dick or harry can usually be present as a spectator.
BJ

I will sacrifice pea n ham soup to attend this....
shaihulud

Thanks for your responses.

The AGM was not well attended and so we need this special meeting.

I agree with Brookie, PirateKombi and Diddlie.  I think that we need to go on line more and to reduce the face to face meetings.

The monthly meeting is usually on the second Wednesday of the month so you won't need to change Alfred's. This meeting is on the first Wednesday as a special only.

Anyone who wishes to, can attend and also have their say. If you would like to attend and tell us why you are keen on VWs but you are not prepared to join the club, we would welcome the feedback. We need input of all sorts and we will treat it all with respect.

I agree that we have become a sort of "wine and cheese club", but it doesn't matter what sort of event we organise, few members attend and those who do are usually the committee. The exceptions are the DoVW, the German Car Day and the breakfast in May at Fast Eddy's and a large part of those who attend those events are from groups such as NoH20 and The KK.

Please attend if you can and tell us what you think should happen, or stop happening as the case may be and what changes you would like to see.

Richard.
Diddlie

With todays fast paced life and family and work commitments, it is very hard to get away to regular meetings Sad, not a good thing, just a fact of the ever changing society.  An online joining facility, fee payment, forum etc would most certainly boost your numbers, I think you need to re-luanch yourself with a new face/attitude which compliments the 21st century.
Brookie

The poll is showing support for online and more modern outlook.

I agree with Richard about the wine and cheese atmosphere that can happen and new blood does wonders for a Club or organisation that becomes moribund.
There is no reason, with the convenience of the net,  that if a formal committee meeting is needed or documents signed it can be organised very quickly by phone or e-mail or if not urgent at the Monthly club run.
If members can see something happening it encourages them to also contribute.
A monthly newsletter does not have impact as Newsletter by email.

We have changed the face of KK especially in WA  in a relatively short time from a Coffee Meet of virtually strangers -it is less than a year- with a forum and events/meets that cater for broad section of VW community.
Eastern States membership is growing and events like Kombis on Kampus could happen there shortly.

Over here on the east coast (Sunshine Coast) we heard that the club scene (Klub VW) was a little too regimented and organised with regular meetings beeing rather too formal.

This from what we understand drove many people away to just being individuals who owned VW's.

The arrival on the net of vw forums shows thst there are a lot of Sunshine Coast VW people who are more interested in catching up and doing what our vehicles are supposed to do drive, be looked at, be worked on, etc, etc ......

My first VW catchup saw us drive down to the Sunshine Coast on a Sunday morning to a meeting with a lovely buch of people from the Gold Coast and Northern NSW. Brisbane people also came down.

The sentiment expressed was that like-minded people could meet and talk VW''s without the restrictions of minuted meetings and formal constitutions, etc ......

Without those people just post  on the forums about "informal meetings" and people who think they can attend post that they will come. It also attracts a lot of new members to attend that very difficult first event because they know that there is no formal crap.

I think that the hardest part is to get people to come along to any VW gathering and if the pressure of a formal meeting is not there then people will come. Once there they will talk VW's until the cows come home.

A whole group of us are going down to Redcliffe (Brisbane) tomorrow just to catch up with people  from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Northern NSW, Toowoomba, etc ......

What are we going to do?
Nothing but catch up with friends we have met through such mediums as an internet forum.
What will we discuss?
Anything and everything about VW's but mainly kombi's. The kids play with each other at a park; adults of all ages, backgrounds and interests talk VW stuff compare vehicles and talk crap; we all have lunch whether it's a picnic or buy some lunch at nearby shops etc.........
A lot of people are hoping that Judy from Byron Bay can make it with her newly resto'ed 59 Splittie "Mercy". Many will want to see Wilfred's new (sole) gas conversion done by Geoff and compare it to Kyra's dual fuel sytem done by a normal gas fitter to all makes of cars.

Generally we just catch up and the numbers have grown over the past 18 months/2yrs.

Some people come and go but there are a core who were at that very first meeting at Robina on the Gold Coast. Many times people have helped out other people and we have stayed at people's places through meeting them at these meetings. One member even hosts more than 30 kombis staying at her place in Nimbin for the Kombi Konvoy for the Mardigrass weekend.

As you can see iit is all a bit informal but anyone can post on the forum about having a get together.

We have Redcliffe tomorrow 26 Sept, next weekend some will go to Warwick for the drags whilst others will go to Old Bar (NSW). October will see another informal get together or a couple of small local ones around where we live. November we have a Christmas Campover on the Sunshine Coast and attend Steve Irwin Day at Australia Zoo at their invitation. Also waiting to hear details of the Gold Coast Show. So you see the VW scene is building up here because there is no pressure to attend formalised club meetings. People in this day and age come because there is no pressure and it's fun ...... not a chore.

Just a few thoughts on my experience but it's something you might find interesting from another state.

Cheers
Brett

PS Hope it all goes well on Wednesday.
BJ

Brett you are on the money.  Similar has happened over here we have a core group that meets, others come and go.  There are other groups out there too, generally we are people who get on and have shared passions.  But I think the main point you make is, it's informal.  I have enough meetings at work and when it comes to the weekend or evenings I am over them!  I just want to drive, talk vw, look at other peoples progress and upgrades to their vehicles.  This environment creates new friendships.  I am sure it is the same across your side too, you all help each other out.  I have met some people since entering the scene, that are so generous with their time - It is fantastic!

I understand that a clubs help in some ways, but barriers get formed and the important stuff to people gets forgotten.

I hope that The VW Club of WA doesn't go down the pan.  It could compliment the scene here.

Do you guys have much to do with the VW club in your state?
samblers

Brookie - your poll concludes nothing (there's 7 'loaded' statements there and only 1 vote!). Sorry.

My opinions, for what they're worth...

Personally I dont see any benefits in an organised 'club'... When someone wants a cruise or a campout or some fish and chips by the beach, just stick a post up or start phoning/texting... spread the word. This, it seems to me, is the modern way of running a 'club' (if we have to call it that)...

Sam
Brookie

Polls do not do much good as I stated- and the "statements" you refer to showed intent and it worked as it got you going and others posted opinions
which are constructive.
