Vinyl and carpet dye.

Have noticed on other Forums re changing colour of vinyl and carpets.
You have to use a carpet/vinyl dye not paint.
VHT is best brand but has been in short supply lately die to factory fire.
Distributed by Speco Thomas.
Have used it on 5-6 Kombi seats, door and side panels as well as hoodlinings.
Read instructions and make sure surface is clean and free from grease.
Rub over gently with soft cloth after 24 hours.
The product is very good and was used by Ford Motor Co in original GT Falcons as they could not get black at time and dyed brown seats from Fairmont models .
You do not use PAINT on seats or door trims.
We have also tried other brands but no where near as good.

The Rod and Custom guys also use this very successfully and many restorers.

Its funny that you should mention about vinyl dye......I painted my rear seat with spray on vinyl paint from bunnings because at the time i had never heard of a vinyl dye......how long has it been on the market for the public..?..gawd i know you are going to tell me years and years. Anyways it looks ok and ok to sit on but in time i am going to get a r/r seat so i can have a bed when i need it. Have to source one first...not the easiest things to come by....

You are right-probably about 50 years. Ford even used it in 1968/9 to colour GT Falcons upholstery Black from the brown Fairmont seats.
You can get the original beds occasionally. Put an ad in Wanted.

VHT vinyl dye is going to be my Christmas present this year so I can do my seats, but I wasn't sure if I could do my headlining as well? Didn't the spray go absolutely everywhere??
Brookie

No-you are spraying from about 20-30cm and it is a good nozzle- read instructions carefully.
If you are doing carpet you must do one coat all in same direction- next coat the opposite way.
We tried to clean vinyl paint from Kombi rooflining -it was black-but it made a mess . We kept it black but did with VHT over the top.

I dont need the dye for the hoodlining as i have fully furred the roof now....actually the more i think about it the more i realise i could line a coffin with the same stuff....hope thats not an omen.

VHT is more readily available- in WA Malz at Balcatta stocks good range-probably in other branches as well.
They also stock good range of approved seat belts.
Autopro usually has it as well and Auto Bahn in Eastern States.
Perhaps members could update in their areas.

This link also show list of colours

I used the VHT stuff for my seats - will post some photos of the beautification of Lola in the Members Rides one day.

It's also available at Supercheap Auto or Repco.  About $12 a can.  You need quite a lot, but I suppose if you're spraying a light colour onto a light colour you might not need so much.  I was covering cream and cherry red seats with black, so took a lot.

Great effect and I'm really pleased with the result.  Would recommend it to anyone.

These are standard Kombi seats that were repacked and then done with VHT dye.

First pics
This is original Sopru camper seat/bed -no damage and was throughly cleaned final clean with mineral turps
3nd Pic

Approx coat and a half with VHT Medium Blue Satin
Has not had gentle buff yet and will need a final coat- approx 2 cans but enough left for final coat.

Update on VHT Vinyl Dyes.

It appears that Speco Thomas have taken SP-951-A Medium Blue stain off their list though it still shows on webpage.
Good time as we are halfway through doing rear seat/bed. and mattress's on 70 poptop for our grandson.
Probably now made in China and you get what they want to make.
If you are using blue and need more grab some now. Confused

e-mail received from Speco Thomas re VHT colours

Hi Warren,

Sorry, but the USA stopped making this colour. We agree with you, but had no say in the matter.
