Type 4 engine into a LowlightIs it a straight and easy swap to take the type 1 engine out of a 71 DC and put in a type 4 engine from a 74?

No!! Type 4 is larger and it wasn't until 72 that engine bay area was enlarged to take Type 4.
If I had a 71 it would definitely remain Type1

Sharpebuilt (in Queensland) sell the upright fan parts to convert the type 4 to the same fan arrangement as the type 1. This way you'd be able to install the type 4 into your 71 bay. However, for all the effort it may be more worth while to consider a type 1 motor with a few mods to gain similar torque and power as a 2ltr type 4.

Thanks, engine mods it is then. There's plenty of info on how to 'improve' a type 1 engine, so I am looking forward to the fun.

A 78mm stroker crank and 90mm bore is a good start for getting a Kombi moving and if done right is reliable too. But I'm not sure what sort of dollars you plan to spend on your 71? (Aussie dollar is up against the US so a stroker crank could possibly be an option now days). Your original 71 cooling fan arrangement should be good for this as I thinks it's the 1st of the doghouse style oil cooler. If $$ are tight then maybe just the 90mm bore with dual carbies etc.

Thanks for that info.
It's not so much the $$ as slipping it past the Treasurer. I'll rebuild the engine myself, with new pistons and crank etc

If your new to motor building it might be best to stick with the stock 69mm stroke crank and just go for a bigger bore size and improved heads etc.
