TYPE 3 engine into split.Does anyone know if the actuall motor, once stripped of all Type 3 cooling gear etc is the same as beetle/kombi motor? The engine in it is a 1600 and only really want to use the main lump as i will be lifting the CC's up a notch...or 2 With all the type 3 cooling gear it looks like its made by a different manufacturer!

A type 3 1600cc motor will bolt into a split once all the cooling tin is removed and replaced with the the cooling tin for a beetle / kombi as it's basically the same motor underneither. It just has a few extra mounting features on the engine case which are used for engine mounting into the type 3 and doesn't effect installing into a beelte/split. Be sure to use the the extra tin installed between the cylinders on the type 3 when you install the beetle tin as this improves the cylinder cooling over and above the basic beetle/kombi cooling tin. It's located inbetween, underside of the cylinders on the type 3 cooling tin. Try to find cooling tin from 71 or new beetle / kombi upright 1600cc ie Doghouse oil cooler style.
PS. an older type 1 beetle /kombi engine case will not bolt into a type 3 as it is missing the extra mounting point.

The other thing to think about is the dip stick. The type 3 has the dip stick inside its oil filler location, connected to under the cap. You can get after market dip sticks that bolt on into the same place where this is bolted on to the block, but I have heard they have a problem leaking. If you use the original pipe from the type 3 and cut the flange off that bolts to the block, you can solder a dip stick tube onto it so it can still come out at the right place in your tin wear of your up right motor. To guage the level of oil in your engine you have to fill it from dry (3 or 4 litres, I'm not exactly sure) and when you know it is full take the new dip stick out and mark it to where full should be. The old marks on the stick can be filed or sanded off before this.
I just read what I wrote and find it hard to follow myself, hope you can make sense of this.
Pete.

I've used several of the Type 3 dip stick adaptors and they are trouble free and just bolt up. Much less hassle in my opinion.

Not correct.... the flow around the bottom of the cylinders is adversely effected when this is done.... If you convert it to an upright cooling system, you must use the correct under cylinder deflectors...

Yes you can.... An aftermarket adapter is available to make this possible... The kit takes its pick-up off the oil pump studs... I have not heard or experienced this kit causing any longterm problems, but I would not recommend this kit as a longterm proposition... I don't feel that this part of the crankcase is designed to carry the sorts of load that could be placed upon it....
