Is it a VDO guage? Do you have a dipstick sensor (or one in the sump)?
Our guage stopped working for a while - it turned out the fuse had been knocked out.
Check that all the connectors in the back of the guage are plugged in properly (pull them off one at a time, make sure they are clean and the wires are all attached, and reconnect). If everything's fine at the front, then it is likely the problem is with the sensor (if you have one) or its connections/grounding.
