Was good to meet all you people in the flesh and have a kombi fueled night of chat.
Can't wait for the next.
Back in the UK there used to be a meet called 'Techenders'. (i think). where everyone would meet up somewhere, and contribute a little and the tech guys would go over simple / advanced servicing jobs to do on the van. Anything from Oil changes and valve setting to full break jobs etc. Great way of learning more and teaching people how to improve and maintain there own. That kinda thing ever happened here?
Anyone interested in the idea?

We nearly had one going some 12 months ago where Kurt Phillips in Fremantle was going to open on a Saturday afternoon and run Kombis over the hoist but could not get enough starters.
Good idea though.

That sounds great.
Maybe another attempt could work this time. Winter projects and all. You recon its worth another attempt and a poll to see who'd be interested?

Polls get very few responses- though if you want no worries -it maybe better to suggest idea in Kombi Events- ask for volunteers to advise and suggest a venue and date and see what happens. I don't feel we should impose on Kurt again.

Was a good smokey nite, nice banta and all that!
Drivin home was classic, had some random R&B chick in a XR8 who was tailgatin me on Kalamunda Rd, flew past me when she could overtake, later i spotted her on kenwick link pulled over by a patrol car for speeding!
You gota love life in a VW!

What time did you kick off and finish off the evening? (just trying to fathom out if I will EVER be able to get to one)

We made it to about 9 - I reckon if it wasn't so cold people would stay on a bit longer. I could chat all night myself. Some travelled from Freo and northern sub's so leaving at 9 would get you home at a reasonable time. Shame that the car park lighting was on the dull side, If this continues to be a regular happening I predict people would stick around.
You wanna get yourself to the next one (burn down the squash club or something )
M n M - I like your idea about a tech night/day - don't know a great deal myself though mate but would come along to learn a bit meself. Stick it up and give it a whirl.....
Steve - Your speedin Tailgater - reminds me of an old storey about a hare and a tortoise

I had a great night too.
Arrived straight from work in the company Pathfinder (sob, sob). Had a great steak burger and washed it down with an Ice coffee. Sucked in a few whoffs of warm fire followed by a bit of smoke (wasn't that bad just need to move up breeze). Chatted to lots with fresh, excited faces - maybe that wasn't you guys then? Put faces & names to net profiles & projects. Heard about other peoples projects and wish lists of models to be projects / road goers. Talked the details of the big Valla event and convoy back to WA. Spotted the late comers as they arrived "hey check the neat 71 bay, is he one of us? Well he's pulling into the carpark. We won't let him leave until he joins" - Kombi stand off! "No sweat it's one of ours!" Then it was all over for another month and the long drive to Rocko.

Hey Wattle Man
Sounds like a good idea, I would be up for that.

Well I would love to learn how to do an oil change

Cool,
Well i'll put something together over the weekend on a new tab and see what happens. I love learning about my van, and hate taking it to mechanics who usually have no idea, as it sounds like happened from Diddles latest story.
Fingers crossed it could be fun.

This Aussie/US site is explanatory- this is for 1600 but easy for Type 4 as only one plug to undo plus filter.

Does anyone know of someone who can repair video tapes? I have a type 4 engine rebuild video which is set out really well. I could possibly lend it to those people want to become farmilar with all the parts to a VW type 4 motor.

Has it snapped, or is it scruched up?
I repaired a snapped tape once with sellotape, it sound dodgy but it worked a treat, with only bout 2sec blur.

There is splicing tape available the same as used for movie film- maybe a yellow pages search will help.
Once repaired it could be transferred to CD/DVD

Got a great response from this idea Mustard Man.....
Anyone one got a huge shed? I can show you how to Oil change (as long as I have 66Splits supervision )
We could do this at my place but I am half way to Kalgoorlie (Sawyers Valley) If anyone is interested.

hurry up and get that shed built BJ, it could be KK headquarters

I would enjoy coming along and learning and seeing first hand.
I will be in that.

Nice suggestion Mustard Man

Im impressed with the response.....
First session could just be classic 3000 mile service stuff, here are some ideas on what to look at.....
1. Doing the tappets (Valve clearances) and replacing rocker gaskets at same time for good practice. Essential and simple when you know how (and have 3 hands)
2. Oil Change, replacing Oil filter, Could also look at filter screen with people that have original fuel pumps here, or normal fuel filter
3. Check fan belt and show how to replace if problem.
4. Clean out Oil bath
5. Spark plug change, and checking gaps....what a spark plug should look like etc....
6. Contact breakers, for those without lecky ignitions...
7. Examples of timing, compression testing....
Thats prob's good for a first session, maybe even a bit opptimistic, also in all that could do things like visual checks, on pipe lines and potential problems etc. fuses. etc.
Anyway, thoughts on these things, like the ideas? Got any other suggestions for classic simple things.
BJ, cheers for the offer of a location, you got the room for a bunch of kombis? and sutible working areas? Although not sure where you are.....is it miles away?? ha, your in the middle of the avon valley or something aren't ya!! Who's gonna sort the skimoys??

my windscreen washers don't work!! Can we maybe look at that, and how about headlight aligning? Simple things for you guys but I haven't a clue.

Good suggestions-have you pumped up windscreen washer bottle

I was just going to suggest that with my new found technical knowledge. Klaus has lost his pipe with his nozzle on the end, it was there when he arrived cos I remember talking to you about it, someone must have stolen it!!!

Sure it hasn't slipped behind kickpanel Often the bottle is just put back without retainer.

I had a little fumble around and couldn't find anything but I didn't take the kick panel off properly, I'll have another go.

How about looking at installing electric conversions for the washers. Or is that sacrilegious......?

If the originals don't work quite a few instal electric but original is simple and works well if looked after.

If you want the original looking washer bottle with a 12 volt electric pump built in, then www.vwheritage.com sell them. Don't get these confused with the general replacement type (which vwheritage also has) which is square shaped and will not fit like your original for a bay bus.

don't even know where the washer bottle is!!!!! Will have a look in daylight tomorrow. Will have a look at heritage web site tonight though just in case I need a new one.

It's behind the panel infront of the drivers feet.

thanks, will have a look in the morning, I have a vague memory of seeing it and the hose being missing.

It is on drivers side behind kick panel. You will see rectanglular opening in kickpanel for heater air and just to right will be a circular style cap or maybe a circular hole. That is opening to pump up washer bottle.
It is about 30cm long and will have tube with standard tyre valve connection.
This may help
