TDC

Hi all,

Does anyone have a sure fire way of finding TDC.  Im having a few issues with timing and want to make sure the marks i have are correct.  This will be for my 72 bay with 1600 engine.

Thanks in advance.
Brookie

This link from Type 2 .com may help and it also includes valve adjustment.

This other link covers static timing and importance of valve and point adjustment to get accurate timing.

Hi,

More q's about timing please.

So the info is all good for static timing, and i get that all, but its the timing at 2500-3000 revs thats almost more important right?  I want to advance my timing don't i?  so that at higher revs the spark happends just before TDC?

So on the fly wheel i've got my TDC mark (Mark 1 engine with a 009 dizi.) Then a mark at 5 deg ATDC and a mark 32 deg ATDC.

So when i'm at idle revs the light flashes nicely on TDC.  When i then move the revs up to about 2500-3000 i've been told it should flash on the 32 degree mark, but it's flashing over 10-15 degrees past it.

So do i need to move the dizi so that at at idle the flash in 5-10 before TDC, making the higher revs closer to the 32 degree mark? or do i not worry about the higher revs timing as make sure the idle timing is spot on?

questions questions....

Oh, and check out these original VW timing films......

The best thing to do is throw away the 009 or sell it to someone with a beach buggy or a modified beetle.
They are designed for lightweight vehicles-not Kombis.

If you were running a 1916 with twin IDAs and a cam it would probably work but driving a modded car for normal use gets very tiring.
This is extract from another post.
There is also another link headed ..another dizzy which is one from Europe but not cheap

The 09 is not progressive advance -just centrifugal- these type of dizzies are used on lightweight cars like hot beetles or buggies with no weight and rev to 6000+.
The advance on these dizzies do not match the torque or power curve of the Type 4 or Type 1 Kombi  motor and with the weight of a Kombi/camper this adds to the effect.
Try it by all means but make sure you have an original to put back.
