Stolen Kombi

My beloved 1975 Kombi was stolen last week in Perth Western Australia. Its big and blue and has Tibetan prayer flag curtains. I'm very sad about this so if you see it, please let me know.
Cheers
Brookie

Hi Michelle -sorry about your Kombi- do you have any photos you can post?
A better description would also help-is it a poptop or bus etc.

I am sure the word will be spread at meeting at Alfred's Kitchen at Guildford tonight.

Hey Michelle, that's awful.... Sad

Yep, best to post up some pix and a good description - interstate (and overseas) transport is common with car theft so it could end up anywhere. (hopefully, it isn't being parted out...)

Good luck in getting your kombi back!

Hi Michelle, terrible news Mad  where abouts in Perth? we will spread the news.....best of luck in finding your kombi.

Stolen Kombi Part 2

It's a 1975 bus (no pop top). Manual.  Rego XLD 892 . Only back bench seat - middle one taken out to fit surfboards, mountain bikes, etc. Sky blue with white roof. White roo bar. Very old holey furry seat covers. Spare tyre on front. Not bad nick - a bit of home  bogging on RH side metal trim - my first attempt Smile I've already mentioned the Tibetan prayer flag curtains. Also had crystal charm hanging from rear view mirror but doubt if that's still there. New cd/radio recently installed (drats). Sticker on back to say I get serviced at Lang Motors in Bayswater and a label off a bottle of VB on front LH screen (courtesy of teenage son). It was taken from outside my 86 yo Mum's house in Rivervale (and now she's all depressed too because she feels like it's her fault).  I'll post a photo when I work out how to do it! Cheers

The easiest way is to open a photobucket.com account and then upload the pix there. You then copy the "[IMG]" tag of the pic and post it into a message...

But if you just message/email it to me (at the top), I will post it up for you...

That's a real drag Michelle....

Stolen Kombi

Big thanks to all you great Kombi people for your help. I always knew you/we were special and all this support has just confirmed it big time! Cheers
Piratekombi

As it is a nice-looking bus with deluxe trim, it is possible it has been taken east (or even overseas) for a paintjob (quite common in the rebirthing of stolen cars) - so it is important for people from other places to also look out for it.

Good luck Michelle! The word is out... Smile

I agree, I would be watching the wharves over the next few months.

If its one of the standard colours I doubt they would even respray it.

Just make it look different by swapping lots of bits over, switch the motor and change chassis numbers etc.

For all you conspiracy theorists......

I found it quite suspicious and coincidental that quite a few Kombis went missing at about the same time about 12 mths ago.

Especially when at the same time there was a bloke from the UK approaching people (jetting around Australia) to buy their Kombis to export to the UK just a few weeks later.

Someone had been tipping him off as to the location of Kombis and he was knocking on doors.

Things that make ya go hmmmmmm.....

Good  grief! I should have had very big locks on Kombi! And here I was thinking everyone had a soft spot for us.

Stolen Kombi

The insurance company is hassling me about what my Kombi is worth?? (priceless) Any suggestions please?
Brookie

You have PM

Stolen Kombi

The insurance guy said he was using Glass's Guide to come up with a value for my Kombi but when I look on there I can't find any like mine! How can they come up with a price from there?
Brookie

Have sent you link on PM  to some Kombis on Carsales.com -there is probably just as many on Carpoint as well.

---------------------------------------------
Piratekombi

It seems to me that many "car guides" often run on the assumption of continuous value depreciation for all second-hand cars - which of course ignores the rise in replacement cost of kombis.  Several people have unfortunately discovered that their insurance company valuation is not realistic... Sad an important consideration when comparing insurance options.  "Replacement value" should mean the real cost of buying a kombi entirely equivalent to the original (not the price paid!).

Good luck Michelle! I hope you are able to convince the company of the real value...
Scotia

Michelle you must be devastated, I know I would be if 'Kevin' was stolen.   Good luck with the insurance.
Brookie

What has been Police reaction to the theft? Were they surprised or do they think the usual WA car thieves have gone upmarket?

You should tell them that Kombi owners are everywhere and looking.

Back in the good old days you could have phoned Swan Taxis and courier firms like Courier Australia and there would be 1500 extra sets of eyes.

Diddlie

We use Swan at work and are one of their priority customers, I'll pass the details onto the taxi drivers tomorrow night, it's worth a shot.  I'll print out a little flyer.

stolen kombi

The police were nice enough when I reported it but slightly amused - "Oh, it's not likely to be picked up for speeding" etc.  I keep thinking that I should call and ask what's being done but I've been told that it would be pointless and that they will let me know when they find it. The taxi idea was suggested to me by a work mate but I didn't really know how to go about it. Thank you Diddlie Smile I just can't get over what a fantastic network you guys have - it's very touching to know you all care. If I get my old friend back I'll certainly bring her along to Alfred's one Wednesday to meet you all and thank you in person.

Michelle,
First sorry for the loss of our Kombi. Now on to insurance business. I can't say I'm familiar with your insurance regs in Austrasilia but here in the US you can go around and find " like" vehicles and get comparable prices to furnish your insurance company. Remember the adjuster works for the insurance company and not for you so you have the burden of sticking up for yourself. Here you don't have to accept the first offer if you feel it's unjust, the best thing to do is print out as many ads with Like Buses and get on VZI the samba, and any other VW source for price quotes and boombard the insurance co. with all of these quotes to get a fair replacement cost for your Bus. Or just go out and find a sutibale bus and tell the insurance co. that one will replace mine. Good luck and Best wishes,
Britt
BJ

Thought I spotted it on Sunday but at a second look, it did not have the chrome trim on the side, instead it was a red and black go faster stripe..... Crying or Very sad
Had thoughts of what was I to do (block it in) and call the cops!  I was thinking of you.

Will keep looking.......
Piratekombi

It is likely that the kombi has already been disguised... so ignore the differences - look at the similarities. Smile

STOLEN KOMBI FOUND!!!

MY BELOVED BIG BLUE BUS HAS BEEN FOUND!
The police contacted me this morning - it had been parked up on a verge in a side street in Midland for the past 12 days!
Steering column has been broken open (wires exposed) and the ignition attacked with I presume a screwdriver. CD/Radio gone but nothing else (that I could see). It has been towed to the insurance assessors and I'll be notified when they have had a look. Hopefully I can then get it to Mr Langs for him to do the repairs (and get that service that it was booked in for 2 weeks ago).
I'M SO EXCITED AND GRATEFUL TO ALL YOU FOLKS WHO SPREAD THE WORD, GAVE ME MORAL SUPPORT WHEN I NEEDED IT AND LOTS OF GREAT ADVISE. I WON'T FORGET IT.
THANK YOU ALL!
Brookie

CONGRATULATIONS

Now we have a happier Kombi owner- once it's on the road you had better start planning for Muresk. Smile  Smile  Smile

It's a blessing that they weren't "real kombi thieves" and abandoned it after what seems like a short while.
Piratekombi

Alice once bought a car that blew a head gasket on it's trip home... after we saw it off on a truck, we went to catch a train home - only to find we'd missed the last one for the night.  A rather dodgy-looking man came over to us and chatted, it turned out he had just got out of prison... he was stranded too - so he headed off to the nearby pokies venue to "borrow" a car to get home! (we hailed a taxi).   It may be that something similar happened here (if it wasn't a joyrider) - it's fortunate that it wasn't stolen for parts or rebirthing.

This is the best news for a while, I am quite chuffed it turned out so well (apart from the minor damage)... Keep smiling. Smile

thats great news Cool  so glad they just left it when they had finished. bet you cant wait to get it back and go cruizin Wink

I think your right, sounds like someone missed the last bus.

We have compulsory immobilisers here on cars newer than 15 years old (something like that).

So it is common for older cars to go missing after the last bus or train.
