Starting ProblemsHey,
Hope to get some advice with her starting problem. She starts great when cold, first time. When i take her for a drive, even a short one. Stop her then go and try to start her, she wont start. I dont pump her as her previous owner said dont give her gas, they said she can be tempermental. It may take me like 5-8 goes. When she does go, its like she need some choke and a couple of pumps on the gas to keep her going. She does have a oil leak when warmed up, and burning alittle when started, so thought she may be running alittle rich. I have just put some Valve Lump in her as the previous owner was using it. So unfortunatley havent really taken her for a drive.
Cheers

HI Lolly welcome to the forum!
My bus has done this to me in the past but only on really hot days, and when I drove her real hard (she was really realy hot) this can cause fuel to evaporate as cause them not not start too easily. But you said yours did this even on a short journey?? I don't know why and will be interested in other peoples responses here myself.
Hope someone has a answer for you, look forward to seeing you around.

Yeah well she was driven on a cold night to the bank like 3 mins up the road....hehe. Someone did mention about the Auto chokes not being set up correctly. But yeah will be interesting to find out. Always thought i would have problems with her starting in the mornings....hehe. Its just alittle annoying as she is doing it all the time.

Must be well frustrating. My old bay used to cutout when I came to a stop as her idle speed was not set up - Annoying as hell - foot jumping between the brake and accelerator pedal
as I said 'hope you get an answer/help soon...

Has it 1800 motor and how do you start it from cold?

Yep Auto 1800 well all i need to do when she is cold, is turn the key, and she starts, i then just give her one pump. She idles great

The usual starting procedure is to pump once and with foot off start motor.
This brings in auto choke which depending on weather will cut out when you reach correct operating temp.
If it is this type of weather a quick blip on throttle will cut choke out.
Idling speed on auto is slightly higher than manual -50-100 rpms.
Sounds like carbs need a tune- adjustment is on left hand one only- do you have any manuals?

This link in Engines should give you idea of carbs and "how to".
The Ratwell link is excellent as is the one in next post.

This link is good advise to the Kombi or any VW owner-especially buying John Muirs Bible.

Well went to get her back from the Mechanics today, they said they fixed her. It was the carbies leaking with worn needle and seats etc. Had about $800 stuff done. Got in her to drive her home, she was blowning heaps of smoke everytime i put the accerator down, and she would like choke, so i stopped her, then i couldnt start her again....so im alittle annoyed, esp when the guys at VW spares said they fixed her. So now she is stuck in freo until i get her back there tomorrow...

Oh No, you must be well upset.... Hope you get it sorted soon.

So they think its def the leak in the carbies, they did one carbie and that was leaking then the other one started leaking, the had to size it down, but still having problems with it. They may have to send it down to the Carbie Mechanics down the road....Anyone else have this problem with their Auto?

Brookie

If you spent $800 on solving starting problem and it is still not fixed and carbies still need attention something doesn't sound right. Carby o/haul is about $120 each with virtually all parts replaced.
Are you having it done in Fremantle?
Manual or auto should not make any difference.

Yeah having it done there had a tune and service thats around $250 plus oil stuff replaced, i think its been alot of labour messing around. Im hoping im not going to pay for much more.

oh and they replaced the needle and seat valves i think they said they had to go down a size due to the leaking still so they had to get another lot in....well im hoping they havent shafted me, cause i could of gone straight to the Carbie place that they deal with.

Can't see leaking being solved by downsizing- most leaks occur in throttle shafts which have to be rebushed.
Keep us up to date.

Oh well its out of the VW Spares now down the road at the Carbie shop, just cant stop the smoke....hmm.....hopefully not needing a recond engine just yet...

STILL What the are they doing with her
|
Lollylegz
|
haha...yeah go figure. Well i will be picking her up today finally. They had to recon both carbies, they were banging their heads together, so will find out what they say, also they did mention about one cyclinder being out, so will ask about that. Will let you know on the finer details when i get her.
