Split found. Help needed

Hi Guys and Gals. I have found a mid 60's split it ok condition Smile The problem is that i cant move it. It has no motor, gearbox or all that other jazz that holds the rear wheels on. I need to be able to roll it.

Do all 1600's/this era splits have the same gearbox?? . I have a beach buggy i can grab parts off if they would help. The rear brakes etc....will they be expensive to pick up?? I know nothing about this stuff. The bus is a real beauty and its driving me crazy not being able to move it.

Are you any good with a welder make a rear axle
using a Trailer axle and weld on some tabs to mount it to the
horns
Shayno

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I'm no good with a welder. I can hardly use a soldering iron Smile It looks like i'll have to search for full rear running gear and get assistance to install it. I've changed motors before but never anything like this.

Cheers
BJ

Hey mate - I am sure someone will come forward to help - Watch this space.....

What distance does it have to be moved?
Perhaps rollers to get it onto to a car trailer would work.
Maybe someone has some dollies that could be fitted under to get it on trailer.

Hi. It is in a backyard and the access to it is quite overgrown. So it needs to travel 25 meters over long grass with a slight uphill. traveling backwards. It has a tow bar. I'm thinking trailer axle and rope or i hear Redux hubs is all i need to get wheels on there.

The buggy is next to it and has wide five stud wheels. It could turn out the running gear is on the buggy but can't get many straight answers from the guy. I'll take some pics of the buggy soon for everyone and if its compatible i'll grab that too.

hi there, i've had to move a spitty a couple of times with no wheels at all or even the rear chassis! i made up a frame that slid over the front beam and one to slide over what was left of the rear cross member and put 100mm caster wheels on them. i'd suggest making some sort of frame with perhaps larger wheels as you have to travel over grass. you could perhaps bolt some kind of bracket to where the spring plate cover goes and mount wheels at that point.

You said it has a towbar on the rear and it has to be dragged / towed backwards?
If so, can a tow truck back up to the back of it and hook up to the towbar then just tow it out. Make sure you get them to understand it's a very valuable vw and not just an old bit of junk like the ill informed might think. It's hard to find a good tow-truck driver who will take care with your car these days.

Does it still have the spring plates on? If so, you could try lashing (with good strong fencing wire) a trailer axle to the end of the spring plates add wheels and drag it out backwards. Ask a farmer, fencing wire fixes everything.

Take your time what ever option you go for because any extra dents etc you put in trying to move it will take 10 times longer to repair as opposed to taking the time to nut something out.

Good luck Smile

Hi again everybody. Do mid 60's Splits have steering locks??? I'm assume not.
BJ

Mine doesn't.. Patrick has fitted one to his bus.  I think it is an extra/aftermarket job?  I will ask him on Saturday when I catch up with him.
Shayno

Thanks BJ that would be great. I'm grabbing it Saturday arvo.
BJ

Had alook at Ptricks lock and had a chat.  It is an after market one - Splits never had them.  He fitted it himself.  I think he scored it on Samba.com - Just lucky to find one.

Hope this helps.....

Got it

Got it....What a mission and a long story. I got it home around 11pm. I'll post pics of the bus in another post. The before pic of my bus is in the bible.

Just some of the stuff we had move

The gap between the house and fence was 2m30 the 4WD and buggy trailer under the rear was about 190 wide. One wheel is seized and stumps galore

Could not have done it without a little help from my friends Greg and former owner ED (who sold his shed Smile)
