sliding door lock- help needed!

ok, the sliding door handle became very stiff and difficult to open, so i undid a few screws and squirted some wd 40 into the mechanism and some graphite powder into the lock- magic- problem solved. about 2 days later, the door would not shut- the mechanism jammed. i'm now able to shut the door but not lock it. when i try and lock it- it won't, just opens again in a jammed state. Embarassed
i've had a look but its beyond me- any advice before i take it to a professional and spend money?
if i have to spend, has anyone had central locking installed- and any thoughts?
Brookie

I think Philia should be able to supply some info.

The problem is in the Position of the lock, when you loosened the screws and sprayed it you must have repositioned the lock. You need to put it back where it was.
Philia

Brookie you are quick. If it was me I would leave the mechanism and shift the stiker plate. Move it down 1mm if that doesn't fix it move 2mm up. Not the real way to do it but may get you out of trouble quickly.

Philia installed a keyless entry to the sliding door, to match the front two doors - the parts were obtained from Jaycar for $50, plus an extra $30 for central locking. You should be able to do it yourself.

The lock itself has two tongues. The upper tongue returns the lock mechanism to a state where you can lock the mechanism....You can't lock the door when the door is open
Adam

thanks- how do i know what the position of the lock was?
there is some play in the 2 screws which go into the end of the door- are these the ones which need adjusting?
Adam

now i might be adjusting the wrong things but i've tried putting the whole box up, down and in the middle- no difference!
i took the whole lot away but couldn't find a way into the actual mechanism- do i need to get inside this box
cheers Embarassed

Sorry a sh!t of a day in Gunnedah......Adam no need to get into the lock . Take your door panel off and sit inside the car and watch what happens
Cable gets pushed back......do it manually from the inside, then climb out a front door and try the key lock. If you can do it then its all in the positioning of the lock or the striker
Adam

its difficult to see too much because of the fridge!
i've given up Crying or Very sad
i'm taking it to the pro tomorrow
Adam

the pro took a look at it and said it'd be cheaper to source a new lock mechanism and fit that!
i'll have another go as i don't like leaving the door unlocked- it sounds like its locking but it doesn't!
as this thread is getting fairly boring i will just reply when its fixed and will hopefully be able to explain how it got fixed!

Don't throw it away-they can't be repaired internally but still may only be adjustment.
Eric or Bill at Volkswest should have a good secondhand one. I got one from Bill a couple of months ago.
