Sierp Brothers Enfield South Australia

The Sierp Brothers of  Enfield South Australia converted Kombi Poptops from new and used very similar furnishings to Sopru.
They were approved and were fitted with alloy Campmobile plate on rear hatch and their own metal logo which is about 200mm long and 25mm wide.
Poptop roof is obviously their own design and seem quite strong and well made. My grandsons 1970 has a timber frame about 80mm high around base of poptop canvas and this is/was varnished.

The only other we know appears to be PirateKombis 72

This is GioVANni the 1970 Poptop

Alice

Yep...that is definitely mine and pirate kombi's Mr. Whippy van pop top!  I love it...causes me a bit of hassle trying to get into under ground car parks though.

I don't think we have a timber frame under our poptop, although I'll check it tomorrow - it might be covered in vinyl.

I have previously not been able to find out who did the conversion - I am so chuffed to finally have the mystery solved! Cool

I have been browsing through David Eccles book "VW Camper - The Inside Story" kindly loaned to me by Samblers, and have not found any model Camper that I can definitely say "That's like mine!"

Then I see this photo by Brookie. There is not much detail of the pop top, but it seems the same as my '71 lowlight! A high, square, boxy design.

Would love to see a side view of your grandson's roof showing the recessed part where the roof-light/ventilator is fitted. Mine has VW embossed into it. A section across my roof is stepped down to provide a flat area to mount the roof light/ventilator so that it does not sit above the rest of the roof when the vehicle is being driven.

I have the aluminium Campmobile badge on the rear hatch. Please advise where the maker's plate should be.

Hi Keith,
I was thinking last night yours may be the same- the makers plate is on right hand  side of rear hatch at same level as Campmobile

Keith D

I definitely have no plate or badge on the right hand side of the rear hatch. However, I swear the pop top roof is the same! - Keith D

We have neither plate nor embossed VW... but we have plenty of lichen!!!

Mr Piratekombi,

We have the very same design of roof!

Interestingly, my Camper was bought new in Hampton, Melbourne. (Avondale Motors)

The Sierp Bros plate is glued on which is unusual for the time.
The painter is removing it carefully so it can be replaced when finished.
Do you have some internal furniture pics Keith?

This is a link that you (Brookie) put on KK a few months ago. I had posted some piccies on Low Lite Life. These photos show the interior of my Camper quite well.

99.9% of campers bought from dealers were VW approved conversions and as such were fully warranted and you know that they were only used as campers in most cases.
Keith's interior is very similar to the original Westy/Sopru styles and one used by the approved converters. Some were to order by dealers for clients and others were ordered by dealers for display and sale.

Avondale Motors still exist and in panel and smash repair business-be interesting if same business.
Perhaps the Pirate could phone and check if it is connected.

Alice checked, and found they are the same business - since (at least) 1966.

She also found this link:

edit: I can't seem to get the whole link to work properly (it is only reading part of it as a URL), so it will have to be copy 'n pasted into the browser address bar.... It seems to work fine otherwise.

Here is an extract:

"[Avondale Motors] is a company which at all material times before 1 April 1968 was called C. & G. Parts Pty. Ltd. For some time before the year 1966 [Avondale Motors] and a related company, C. & G. Motors Pty. Ltd., had been wholly owned subsidiaries of Automobile & General Industries Ltd. (``Autogen''). C. & G. Motors Pty. Ltd. carried on the business of selling and servicing motor vehicles from showrooms in a'Beckett Street, Melbourne and Nepean Highway, Moorabbin and from a service station at Yarra Bank Road, South Melbourne. That company had franchises for Peugeot, Renault, Studebaker, Citroen, Aston Martin, N.S.U. and Mazda cars and Diamond T. trucks, and sold and serviced vehicles of those descriptions, but it also sold used cars of other makes and serviced cars of any make. [Avondale Motors] sold motor parts and accessories to C. & G. Motors Pty. Ltd., to other motor dealers and traders and to the general public. Its stock-in-trade included some parts that were for use only in the vehicles the subject of the franchises (the sales of these parts constituted about three-quarters of [Avondale Motors'] sales) and some parts that could be used in other types of motor vehicles as well. It operated from the premises of C. & G. Motors Pty. Ltd. at a'Beckett Street, Nepean Highway and Yarra Bank Road and also from a storeroom at Heidelberg where the vehicles for which C. & G. Motors Pty. Ltd. held franchises were assembled."

I spotted another Sierp Bros poptop at the recent Vic DOVW - it was a 1972.  There is also an Adelaide one on another forum - it is also a 1972.

I am yet to see any Sierps earlier than 1970, or later than 1972.
Brookie

They may have only been a small volume but obviously lasted well Smile  Smile
