Rust repairs

Many panic when they find rust in areas other than floors.
You don't always need a panelbeater. I have found some of the best are the old fahioned boilermaker/welders and similar metalworkers who use an oxy and other welding equipment like an artist.
Others are amatuers who are self taught because they love restoration.
Photos below show what can be done.

This was 72 front bumper with many coats of paint and some surface rust.

It was sand blasted- treated with a rust proof and then similar primer.

Photo is as it came back from sandblasting.

Make sure your repairer or if you are doing it yourself to make clean cuts.
Use a disc not oxy as floor panels will distort if you try and cut them with oxy.
They are spot welded in various spots which you can pick up if underside is really clean.
Replacement floor panels can be sourced but we have always managed to get large pieces from wreckers if needed.
If it is only small areas it is just as easy to use correct guage metal and make sure you treat with rust inhibitor.

Update on bits and pieces.
Just having  a shed/trailer clean/sort out as we get ready to transplant 1600 TP into our 73 poptop.
Found a piece of strange shape metal and then remembered it was side piece of Kombi including pillar from drivers door. We had Volkswest cut out a replacement panel to go behind drivers seat on a Kombi we bought which someone had removed.  Bill cut to include areas of factory joins so we could align properly etc.
Noticed after that piece left which included side and part of chassis had the compound curve and thought it could be ideal for windscreen pillars etc.
While not the correct curve or radius it is a great starter point for a good welder. Also the correct guage to match existing panels. Nearly threw it out again today but thought we may get a bad one again that somebody will need this bit Sad

Brookie, Slightly off topic(ish) but I remember somewhere and someone posted a link for a bloke nr Perth who is a retired welder.

Am I mistaken, was that you? And do you still have his details?

If not would you recommend others? I'm looking at getting old pieces grinded out and new welded in, I have the panels, but not confident enough to do it

Thanks in advance

This is original link- I phoned him couple of times but he was always busy.

http://thekombikonnection.myfreeforum.org/about150.html

Gary Gibb- also is in Recommended Repairers and he has done rust and panel on quite a few members Kombis.
There should be some old really good welders in Mandurah- I think that is where you are from memory.
Perhaps an ad in local newspaper for retired welder may help.
If I think of others I will let you know.
How do you like the WA Kombi/VW scene now? Smile

Brookie,
I knew it was somewhere! Thanks for that, think he might be too far for me to travel to anyways, but thanks heaps

Yeah I've had a look around, not many people wanna touch it, sounds familiar ey! I'll keep calling tho not a problem, paper out tomoz too and will have another look, waiting on a few people to get back to me.

Yeah Mandurah tho, well remembered! And VW scene....yeah seems this site is more focused on WA so it's good. There's more here than I thought and in recent months the amount of VW's that have crawled onto the roads is unreal!!!

I'm focusing on getting her done for October for the Toodyay, fingers crossed!

Thanks again
xxx
