Removing Ads

A lot of new members get concerned about the placement of Google Ads after their posts... this is due to the Kombi Konnection being a forum without commercial sponsors, hosted on a "free" provider.  The ads are placed automatically after the last post in the thread by Google through a deal with the site provider (myfreeforum), not KK admin.

There is, however, an easy way to remove the ads. If you use Firefox, install an add-on called Ad-Block Plus.  Then go into Tools, Add-ons, Ad-Block Plus Options and add a Filter rule "pagead*". (without the quote marks, but with the asterix).

Here is a link to Ad-Block Plus:

Download Firefox here:

Another add-on called NoScript can block the ads while also improving your security by allowing you to switch on/off java, javascript, Flash etc... I use and recommend NoScript, however it may cause problems for the inexperienced or non-techie.

As an online software developer I think you might find many sites now require JavaScript (which incidentally is a completely different thing to Java). Any site using AJAX (and every day there are more and more) use it. eBay for example.

Sure, turn it off if you are visiting hackers sites, porn sites etc, but you probably want to leave it on generally.

If you block the ads they are probably not 'counted' and TheKK get no benefit.

I don't mind the ads but I would prefer to see them after the signature of my post and not between my message and my signature.

I thought i was the only one getting all the adds, good to see others getting a view at them. They dont bother me actually.

I leave javascript etc off by default, and always have... it only takes moments to re-activate it on any site.  Without scripts, most sites load much quicker (eg no Flash), and there are no popups or other annoyances. By the time you realise a site is a security risk, it is usually too late. I also like to have scripts off to prevent sites (such as google, or photobucket) collecting too much info about my browsing habits (I know I have been "spotted", for example, when VW or campervan ads mysteriously start appearing on webpages - time to crank up Ad-Aware and Spybot!) I have the plugin set, by default, to allow certain "trusted" sites so it rarely inconveniences me.

With broadband, the ads don't bother me as much as they used to (waiting on dialup for a page to download a large picture ad is frustrating!)... but I am still in the habit of nuking them whenever I can. I used to also have external images off by default.
