Paint and Filler compatability

Thought I would post on this as I have seen this happen many times and twice in the past week or so.

First was a paint job in/and during prep. This Kombi had many coats of paint and in someplaces original primer was still there. However at some stage it had a number of repairs and bogged with "standard" bog/filler and then painted with 2 pac. They are not compatible.
I was told ages ago about about using modern 2 pac and special paints on older vehicles , especially Kombis, which were painted with enamal and even with a bare metal strip their is residue in metal that will eventually cause separation of new paint. Maybe years but it will happen and where it does rust will form again.
We have always used acrylic enamel on Kombis.

Secondly is one I am helping clean up before going to paintshop.
This had "glued on" rubber waistline which was glued on with blobs of glue approx every 6" or 15cm and then spread.
Where blobs were rust has formed and penetrated surface to extent some welding will be needed. If you must glue bling on your Kombi get some proper glue or do what the panelbeaters do and use "hard as nails" quick version.

This Kombi was also painted some time ago with a paint that was not compatible with original paint and separation and cracking can be seen right to original VW primer.
We allowed for this when we were worked out costings etc.

We have a couple of current pro restorers on here and some good "amateurs" so perhaps they could contribute their opinions.

So, acrylic enamel is okay? That is what I am heading for, though I've not yet bought the paint

IMO that is only way to go but I guess others may have different ideas Smile
