Oil quality

Noticed on another forum (non VW) a query on oil quality and thought it would be interesting to see what people are using.

I'm using Penrite and have for about 7-8 years in all cars just not VW.
Seems to keep internals clean and no heating or pressure problems

I also use Penrite in everything. Have been for many years. Never had any problems with it.

Mobil 1 for turbo vehicles.

Penrite or Valvoline for dubs.

I've always used to 20-50.....

But what about for a brand new engine, should you continue to use what you always have, and that has served you well,  or should you use maybe a thinner oil for the first few hundred then change up to something thicker??

Hey Mustard Man,

I rebuilt my Austin Seven engine completely, even to installing new cylinder liners and pouring new white metal bearings. I used Penrite Running In oil for about 1000km, then reverted to Penrite 20W-50. (as advised by my Penrite supplier). No problems whatsoever.

Penrite oils are used extensively in air cooled motorcycle engines, so should present no problems when used in the Kombis. The late John Diamond, founder of Penrite, gave many presentations and talks to the Veteran Car Club in Perth, and his products were originally designed for vintage and racing vehicles. He was an old car owner and enthusiast himself.

Excellent post.  Thanks for info guys.  Anyone got other thoughts??

Yeah.
Penrite 15/60
Used it on modern cars to sort lifter noise a bit better than other options tried. With pro-mar,like the stuff for nursing sad engines and have proven extra fuel savings in all engines ,good, that ive tried.
Tried a 25/60 in worn engine but no reduction of noise n ran hotter by about 5-10 deg so tend to go along with the keep oil flowing fraternity for cooling.
Being semi synthetic may be considered helpful in hot conditions against seizing but reality [in my line of reasoning] is heads /valve that fail much sooner so no point.

Penrite considering doing a Tech report on their oil in VW aircooled engines.
Will update when they advise.

Kombi Dad

The local VW guy from Volksparts recommends  Valvoline which I have used for 11 years in both of my kombis.  Works for me.
