This was a 62 Single cab we had in the 80's. We named it "Noel Kombi", after Noel Crombie of Split Enz fame. A signwriter mate wrote it on the front for us, although it must have been after this photo was taken. Me and a couple of the lads pitched in $500 for it, mainly to use as a "Ski Hack". It cruised up most the South Island fields in the 3 or 4 years we had it. We also used her for booze cruises and lugging band gear around. Many good times were had, and all sorts of high jinks went on in the back, which had the walls lined with posters, mattress's, a red light, and even a funnel and hose set up for taking a piss! (you didn't want to be the car following...)
It was brought new by Godley Peaks Station near Lake Tekapo, from there to Henshaw Motors in Timaru, then to a farmer called Jimmy Page in Fairlie. When we got it had 98,000 on the clock, mud grip tyres, but the motor did eventually die (so did the next two!) If i remember right we lost interest when motor no. 3 died, and it was taken to a car dump near Pleasant Point. (Back then these were a dime a dozen) Seen here at the top of the Crown Range, on the way to Coronet Peak Ski Field.
Of course i wished we'd kept her, in fact i went back to the car dump last year, but it's long gone. However the legend of Noel Kombi lives on.....

Yes i'm restoring a 65 Devon. Also got a 60 Beetle. Funny how we always want back what we used to have... (cars that is, not women!)
There's quite a few kombi's under the hammer in Christchurch where i live. I know of 4 splits, and a couple of single cabs and bays soon to hit the road. Also the odd one coming in from the states - a couple of 60's double cabs this year. But wer'e finding them here though, it's amazing what is still coming out from under the weeds, there's usually a couple for sale on our auction website at any one time....

Found another couple of old pics of "Noel".
This one in a blizzard on the way to Arthurs Pass, mid 80's...
And looks like a puncture here...And yeah i know we spelt it wrong, but note the "groupies" hanging round
