My dads first bus

My Dads first bus

I thought i would show you all a pic of my dads first bus.

He bought this '76 westfalia from southern motors brand new.The photo is from 1991 at my house in clayton. It was mum and dads plan to retire within 10 years and they wanted to travel australia. They did what they planned and went round OZ 3 times i believe. Before that they went to a different city each xmas hols,...me included...As dad was around 60 when i was a youngen he had developed arthritis wheich meant he had a few accidents (some he caused) to not bothering to use his mirrors due to the fact he couldnt turn his head properly. Also had a bad habit of keeping curtain closed...It was always a scary ride with my dad...I remember telling him off one day and he pulled over somewhere sth of cairns..bout 20 km maybe and told me to get out...So i did, backpack and water bottle included then off he went. I caught up with them at yorkeys knob 2 days later somewhat UN repentant...(sort of how i am now). Before they went on thier first Oz trip he utilised the pop top and fibreglassed it to an icecream van design due to fact his arthritis wouldnt let him push up the pop top any more.
The worst accident they had was up the top end somewhere where a road train swept by them and literally blew them off the road and they rolled 3 times down an embankment. Mum and dad went off to hospital and surprisingly the bus was repairable. So once they recovered from minor injuries it went in for repair and came out like new and off they went.
Anyway thought i would share this with you all as i was looking back on some zipped files and found this...i know there are more pics but my sister has them and we dont see eye to eye..lol.....

Interesting story - so what happened to the camper in the end? It was starting to look tired even then...

my dad gave it to my layabout brother peter who ripped the heart out of it and trashed it........if i had the info re the chassis number i would try to track it somehow......

Confused wow...sad story.....not too wrapped about the bit of leaving you on the side of the road stuff...
and i've nearly been blown off the road by big trucks too...real scary stuff..

shame you lost the bus in the end to someone that didn't care...

such is life...
