Motor & Gearbox costs and who to trust in Perth

Guys as I am new to Perth I would like to know who and how much to pay for a reco 1800-2lt engine and gearbox, plus install cost. Adding up some of the quotes for install, supply recon engine and box around $6000-$7000 grand. (3500-4000 Engine, 1000-1300 G-box plus 1000 install). Is this right? Who is recommended to use in and around Perth.

Thanks

Chris

Pic's of the van on the way.

Chris- Welcome to the West! I've found GERRYKAY MECHANICAL of Morley very good. He's a VW/Subaru specialist. He's done a '71 lowlite engine rebuild for me, apart from all sorts of other mechanical jobs and I've been well pleased with his work. He's a nice guy as well! - Keith D

Gerry Kay also builds most of the Formula Vee engines in WA and has terrific reputation for reliability.

Prices vary everywhere but it would pay to have a talk to a few in our Recommended Repairers section.
Do you know what problems your engine and box have?

$1000 sounds a lot for installation.

Thanks for info will give Garry a call. This is the first time owning a Kombi so I can handle the easier stuff like painting, cleaning years of sand from under seats and mats etc. But I want the van to be reliable and last, I have the money to do it right but at the same time only want to do it once and not get ripped off in the process.

I took the van to Balcatta VW for the guys to look at and I knew the van wasn't in best shape relating to the engine / gearbox.

Engine - Low on compression / Worn Cam / Old / Slight oil leak

Gearbox - Issue with changing from 3rd back into 2nd will only change at slow speed under 20km fine from 1st into 2nd. Had this looked at but mechanic was not able to adjust it. It may not require a rebuild but while it is out of the car I may as well do it.

Install was based on $90-$100 hr charge out rate.

So there we go national debt of a small South Pacific Island....

Will keep you updated and the sooner I get it up and going the sooner I can show her off to you guys...

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Were compression readings even?
Were shift linkage bushes checked?
All Kombis leak oil Smile Seriously where was it leaking -front , back , sides etc.

You should come to Muresk and you will get lots of advice. Smile

I have seen a Kombi motor removed and another installed in 45 minutes and that was guy on his own in workshop.

Compression readings were all different, will let you know the readings when I find the receipt. Gearbox linkages were checked not sure about the bushes? The van has a quickshift at the moment which could be some of the problem. I called Gerry Kay today and he seems to know his stuff and was upfront with me and said he would rebuild my current engine to keep things original (numbers etc) and I expressed my concern on not really knowing what I am getting in buying a pre done engine. He said full install including everything including painting tins around $5000 complete with all German components. He said he would look at the gearbox and it may not need a rebuild but I said I woudl rather it was done along with a new clutch. So still alot of coin but I want it done I have spent alot on the van and this just is part of it. Thanks for the emails and info. I wanted to come to Muresk but I am back in Brisbane over that weekend. When is the next get together, German Day? Look forward to meeting yourself and some of the other guys.

Cheers

Chris
