KUSTOMKOMBI DUAL CAB

Hi there All
Well here we go. Heres the Kick Off.
Ive have decided to get started on the Ute. Its not a PRETTY ONE but one day it will be done. ( I HOPE, Well the wife does anyway. )There is plenty of mods to do on this one so no hurry as i might change my mind as i go.
Its been around the traps and i have heard some stories about it. It was used for a Variety Club Bash/ Redex as a support vehicle. It did get a few bashes on the way. It use to have a 6 point roll cage fitted inside which the dash still shows the scars of the hammer or sledge hammer Confused , but has been removed before i got it. I still have the rear cage which will go back on. The wheel arches have been re-shaped at the front and pumped on the rear. It use to run off road wheels.
As said before it will be a slow exercise but it will be happening. Here are some pics as i found it Sad  Surprised

Spare wheel i had Couldnt resist Smile

Rebuilt 1800 sitting ready for install and Indian Automotive beam adjusters already fitted to my spare beam. Ready for some height adjustment. Cool  Cool

Some 16x6 Alloys ive had for awhile

Will Post more pics as i go
 Thanks Jamie

Are the mags a factory wheels ie Audi or Merc or are they custom wheels?

They are all great projects and the type 4 won't let you down if done right:-)
KustomKombi.Com

Hi Phat
Believe it or not but they are Landrover Freelander Rims. with Track Adjusters. 16"x6". I scored these from my father who works at Rover in Bris Vegas. I had these on 1 of my jetski trailers i had. the 1 good thing about it is that they are a Ford stud pattern which opens up a wider range of Rims. Will post pics of Track adjusters later on.

Here is a better pic of the Rim and height of the Ute

Now with the Beam in and Lowered but will give more details on the lowering later

 Befinately more to come later
Phat bus

Those wheels look great!

I know when I was trying to get some more mag nuts for some old Hotwire mags it turned out to be Landrover wheel nuts that suited. I'm not sure what track addjusters are? Are they what we call wheel spacers?
close stud Kombi's are a 112mm stud paturn like Merc, Audi and the new beetle. But I think all australian Fords is 114mm. Apparently in the US Ford make a Galaxy with a 112mm stud, but that is just what I've heard from others on the Ford Galaxy stud paturn.

OK, going to ask a really dumb question here.  What is a beam and how does it fit into a Kombi?  See?  Told you it was dumb.

While I'm at it, what's an IRS?  I've seen that term bandied around for a long time and never asked what it is.

Jamie, this poor DC looks pretty sad (except for the sexy wheels) at the moment, but I know that if anyone can make it look bewdiful, you can.  Look forward to seeing some more photos as you progress.

Kyznet, there is never a such thing as a dumb question. Everyone who knows what IRS has either asked the question or some asked for them at some stage.

IRS is short for 'Independent Rear Suspension" which means each rear wheel can move up and down on the road without effecting the rear wheel on the other side of the vehicle. Result is more stable road holding and a more comfy ride.

Beam is the term for the housing on the front of a VW which houses the torsion (spelling?) bars which are the spring arrangement for the front of your VW. If you look under the front of your VW. You will see two round steel tubes about 70mm in diametre running from side to side between the front wheels. One will be on top of the other and the suspension arms will be attached to the ends of the top and bottom beam. All sorts of tricks are done to VW beams to make the suspension height adjustable or the wheels closer together etc.

Hi Kyznet.
Here are some pics of what they call Beams (front suspension).
This is a Beam which i have modified with Indian Automotive Beam Adjusters. As you can see the Ratchet Style Adjustment and the Adjustable Bump Stops. Stops not fitted

Here the Beam is fitted on the Ute

Back to the Project
Here you can see how good the wiring was left alone NOT Mad

Here are the Air Horns that i found under the ute. Think they got some heat into them.

Here you can now see the wiring is back together, Fuse box mounted back up and Fuses put back in.

Now just to give some of you out there a TIP. Laughing
In my opinion, If you ever come across difficult wiring and you are unsure, Just as i was, I always leave the fuses out and power up the system with a Battery Charger that has a Circuit Breaker (Safety Switch). Doing this it will protect your wiring and allows you to find a Short Curcuit before you melt wires together. If you connect it straight to the Battery you may have a short and without the Circuit Breaker it will melt the wiring and cause bigger problems. Once the Power supply to the Fuse box Checks OK Start to fit the Fuses suppling power to other component and Check as you go. Like any project just take your time and dont look at the Big Picture but just work through it slowly.
Hope this Helps some of you out there.
Thanks Jamie

Hi All
Yeh Maharg i do love the COMMERCIALS Cool  Cool  They are so COOL Cool
I have been attacking the ute with a couple of grinders lately and i say 2 as the 9" for the big quick cuts and the 4" for finish work. Here is some photos of the Donor i have been using for some parts and the Walk through Seat Frames. I painlessly drilled and cut them free, well not so PAINLESS there was a bit of Claret Shocked  about.

As you can see in this next pics there was alot of drilling and Yes double it for each side.

Finally ready to go in, Almost.

Well next pics Cutting out the old seat frames.
Thanks Jamie
KustomKombi.Com

Hi All
Well here we go on cutting out the Old Seat Frames on the ute. I find the utes to be a bit tight in the back and i do like some room, and i need the walk through to suit my plans for this ONE DAY WILD UTE.

Before Grinder

After Grinder

After a fair bit of cutting and cleaning up you can finally try to fit things together.

What RUST Who said anything about RUST Embarassed

Trust me, Its worse now than that picture. It was in the road so i cut it all of. Pics hopefully coming soon.
  Thanks Jamie
