Kombi is not a brickThough this is posted here as a sticky -Kombi Aerodynamics -it is nice to remind people that the Kombi shape is very efficient. Any body who has raced or been involved in racecars knows the Kamm effect or the vertical rear end creating a partial vacuum- that is reason all that gravel dust gets on your rear end

History
The idea for the Type 2 is credited to Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon, who drew the first sketches of the van in 1947. The aerodynamics of the first prototypes were not good but heavy optimisation took place at the wind tunnel of the Technical University of Braunschweig. The wind tunnel work paid off, as the Type 2 was aerodynamically superior to the Beetle despite its slab-sided shape. Three years later, under the direction of Volkswagen's new CEO Heinz Nordhoff, the first production model left the factory at Wolfsburg.

That would explain why the cars behind us are always following so close...

Yep, it's not that Kombis are slow, it's because the cars behind us are trying to travel in our slip stream and make the most of our aerodynamic superiority.
My bus must be especially good because I always have a line of cars in my slip stream.

thats right.....a couple years ago i bought a mitsubishi starwagon for 5 k and whilst it was economical and drove well it just wasnt the same as a kombi...Though the mitzi took us places and camping it was still just a mitsubishi..it wasnt a kombi. I had a yearning for my second bus and made plans to give the mitzi to my son when he got his licence. Sure bonnie rocks about a bit on the freeway and yes people cant wait to get past me but i wouldnt have it any other way...i look at it this way...we(kombi owners) have been charged to slow down traffic and make the roads a safer place for all. Peoepl can see our contented looks and at times they smile..so mr ben pon should be congratulated on those initial sketches for without him we might not be driving our buses as we know them...
