Depends on condition- rust, damage etc-some do it themselves for $200-400 and other pay much much more.
You can pay roughly from $2000 - 4000 for a pretty standard paint job. That is external and no major rust or panel damage.
I think it has been suggested you come to Muresk on Sunday and you can talk to Kombi owners who should be able to help.

I have been looking at cheap paint options (we have two kombis so are willing to "experiment" on one...)
Have a look at this thread about rustoleum:

and this:

There are also rattlecans:

If you want a full on resto (show car) expect no change from $10K
Things to consider when taking on such a job:
Transportation of the vehicle to and from body shop (usually with no windows)
Cost of new rubbers/seals $800 approx
Any rust that gets discovered when she's stripped needs fixing (can be $1000's)
If your like me you wont want any of the old bits to go back on.....that costs!
For a first car, seriously consider buying a good solid kombi ready to roll, your bound to ding it in your first year or two (or some other sod will) pile it full of your mates and go bush bashing, camping, fishing etc use and abuse it (well may be not abuse it)
Expect to pay around $5000 for a nice vehicle. It would be worth allowing an extra $1000 for a full good service (you may even get change from this)
As Brookie said if you can make it to Muresk there will be plenty more people to offer you their opinion.
