help needed.. steering box

hey guys. i have just discovered that i need a new steering box for freckLes. freckLes is a '71 kombi panel van with a steering box thats on its way out.. trouble is its a cast iron one. i know they only made these for about two years.. so i figure they'd be as rare as hens teeth.

any one got one? just kicking around.. collecting dust...

any info on the above would be appreciated. or info on what i can do.. get the old one reconditioned perhaps..

What is your chassis Number- both if it has two.?
Brookie

The part No. VW number 214 415 049 on your steering is late bay to 1979.

and are available new from VW Heritage in UK
Steering box RHD 1973-79 NEW inc surcharge £50.00+
[214-415-049/H] £353.75
Give them your box and you get £50 back.

Rather you stayed in WA but your box is not "odd" and you should be able to get one fairly easily.
I think my 72 panel is the same but only just back home so will check when I can get underneath.

crikey brookie. you are worth your weight in kombi love. thanks pal. you're a star.

but now i'm confused as to how a 71 kombi has a late steering box!! unless its been chopped.! bummer if so.

but at least it can be fixed. i just got you pm also. thanks again. i've not had it looked at, so the one i have may just need a tweek. fingers crossed..

Have idea early bay -late 67 to late 69 which had different beam , brakes etc had what is called early box. 70+ had late box.

just pulled the steering box off the 69 and the vw part number is...

214-415-049 E......has a plate on the side with a serial number and 8/68 date.....

part number 214-415-049 H is the late '72 to late '79 RHD......

part number is exactly the same, just the H or E designates early or late bay by the looks.....

have you pulled the old box to see the plate cos i reckon yours might have the 'E' designation.....

cheers

hey guys. thanks for your efforts on this issue. but.. i have an 'F' after the vw number. so the part is VW 214 415 049 F.

not sure if i'm back to square one now or not.

rOOster......is that part number on the rivetted plate?

peter
Tiger

yea. it is.
splitfamily4tune8*

ok...mine shows a vw (in a circle) followed by a number and below, a ZE in a circle followed by another part number....is that the same on your plate?...if so, whats the ZE number?

peter
Tiger

the ze number is 812995510

there is another number. stamped on by hand & stencil.. thats i think it says FABR 876057 ] - the ] looks like a reverse C

hope that helps
splitfamily4tune8*

hhmmmm....that ZE number is nearly exactly the same as mine.......only thing is mine has a '2' at the end after the 5510..so it reads.....8129955102......does the stamped number have 2 separate panels....cos in the 2nd panel mine reads 8/68, DOM i think......

have you cleaned the plate completely?.......maybe the F could be an E....considering the 2 was missed on the other part number.....

reckon we're close......DAMN CLOSE!!!

peter
Tiger

ok. after having another look. the cleaner has worked better during the wait..

it's defo an F so VW Nr 214 415 049 F

the ZE/F Nr 8129 955 106

the stamped (in two parts) 8760470 170
splitfamily4tune8*

aahhh gooodd...........reckon the '170' is the og build date, Jan 1970.....the ZE is sequential by the looks.........so it looks to me like they are the same box......www.thesamba.com have rebuilt 68-72 boxes (LHD) for US$625.....email me with what you reckon is a fair price for this one......i'm not going to be stupid about it.........

peter
Tiger

crikey. at this point then, i've got to look at the cheaper option of an overhaul.
i got this reply from a company in sydney.

Hi Charlie,

We could look at overhauling your old steering box (case hardening permitting) – last cost approx $275 incl. GST.

Regards,

Rohan

i'll email him again and see what the crack is before i dismiss yours tho.

dont sell it on just yet. thanks for your efforts for now.

rOOster.
splitfamily4tune8*

i reckon US$600 is a bit (read LOT) stupid....i've emailed you with a bit more reasonable price

peter
