GEARSHIFT COUPLER

How does this thing work?  &  Should it have lots of play?
66split

dont think it should have any play. isnt it basically a rubber filled cup?
BJ

Cheers Dave for your reply
I possibly need a new one then.  Mine has plenty of play - the twisty type.

Fitted a new scat shifter today after removing my front rod and replacing that really awkward plastic bush that I srewed up before.  I also managed to change one of the shuttle cock ones on the long rod.

If anyone has a spoon in a porridge bowl for a gearstick I highly recomend changing to one of these Scat shifters or equivelent.  It is by far the best improvement I have ever done in terms of a better drive to my bus. If anyone wants to have a drive to see what one of these things feels like, well I am over the moon.

The next job is gonna be the steering play, she'll feel like a new vehicle after that is complete.

Although the gears appear fine, I am still interested if anyone knows anymore about the "Coupler" and its job.

The latest issue of VWMA has article on Beetle coupler which looks identical- the early model is like yours and the later model is more "squarish"- they are interchangeable.

Will have a look through some other manuals.

The coupler is a rigid connection between the two rods, thats all. The rubber is there to correct minor misalignment between the two rods, and there should be no play.

Maybe the drilled area of the rods where the grub screws locate has enlargened?

Grub screws loose/missing? They should have a pointy end, yes?
BJ

Thanks Guys, mine is definately shafted - Both grib screws are in place and one will not budge! I will be replacing this as soon as I can.

Sam are you about to order any parts from anywhere so I can tag on a few bits?

I have had a couple of goes at removing the stubborn bolt over the past few months and tonight was the night I finally got the sod off!

I have been busy (really busy) decorating our house over the last couple months and the old girl in garage has really just been sittin there.

I decided to take on this job after a chat with 66split about my options I went for the "Drill the bolt out" one.  Sounds easy?! This job could have been easier if I planned it better and had patience.....

To start with my bus is low - just enough for me to riggle under and since I left my jack round at shanes place I had to "riggle" under and out about 50 times.  I started with a 3mm drill bit and this went ok, the trouble started when I up sized the bit - it was longer and the made it real awkward as I could not get my hand around the handle!  aaaahhh! then it snagged, then it fell, then it burnt me - just enough to say #$%^.

This was 3 hours of frustration, neck ache, and to top it off I got myself stuck under the front.  I managed to riggle into a position that I could not get out of.  I shouted for the mrs to get off the sofa and lift the front of the bus (1cm) to buy me some extra room Rolling Eyes

This was definately the most mentally hard job yet!!!! Glad it's over Cool

Sounds like hard work-just as well you did it with "Mrs" at home- Poppy probably couldn't have helped Smile

I bought myself one for the bus, but still haven't gotten round to fitting it.  Thinking its gonna be a nasty job!!
66split
