Fuel Smell in cab when tank full

Hi Guys,

Filled up the kombi for a trip up the coast on the weekend and it smelt of fuel until the tank got to about 3/4 on the gauge. I didn't notice any fuel leaking of overflow as mentioned in a couple of other posts. Any ideas?

Have you checked your fuel hoses...... especially the short one coming out of the tank?
Piratekombi

If you can smell fuel, there is a leak... if it stops after you use a quarter of the tank, then it is likely an overflow issue eg from the fuel filler hose...

I get exactly this too... It's full on, and leading me to seriously consider losing the kombi because I don't want my daughter breathing in fumes all the time. How do you fix the problem? I've been told fuel tank stuff is very expensive  Confused

Is the smell coming through the heater, and are you sure it is petrol fumes and not exhaust fumes? Does the smell ease as the tank gets emptier (suggesting say crack in filler) or constant (suggesting another leak)? ... if it is the latter, try to trace it to ensure it isn't say a leak in the engine....

Heater isn't connected. Seems stronger when just refuelled, but I can smell it all the time.
Not sure if it's exhaust or fuel. Maybe exhaust, maybe a dodgey seal on back door?
I've asked my mechanic to have a good look at the engine when he last serviced it and tell me what needs doing, so surely if it was a fuel leak in the engine he'd let me know...?

Fuel tank and pump fuel lines is not expensive- even fuel guage sender can be done without removing motor and tank-

How long since your fuel lines have been replaced?
They should be replaced every two years at least- especially the ones from fuel tank to pump and return and check overflow pipe from filler pipe at same time.
This link show importance apart from smell-if your heater pipes are not connected you van can get that smell as well.

As far as I know they haven't been replaced. The guy from Stokers Siding Garage did something to stop it flooding when I was over there (Northern NSW) because the brand new air filter he'd put in a week before ended up soaked in petrol and there was fuel in the oil, but other than that I don't know anything about fuel lines.
Bill West from Volkswest told me when I first got the van that the fuel gauge couldn't be fixed without removing the fuel tank and it would end up being hundreds of dollars in time and labour, so wasn't worth doing...?

I would say they need checking and the vacuum hoses across back of motor to T junction near No3 cylinder. Left hand back looking into engine bay.
Also rubber hose into LH manifold. They can crack and let air in which makes cylinder act like pump and suck air, fuel, Oil etc.

Fuel guage sender unit:
In theory you have to remove engine to get fuel tank out.
This KK link will link you to complete description of doing it very simply with photos without having do do this

Cheers for the info. Will attempt when Liam has 3 weeks off starting next week...

FIrst inspection findings - fuel smell

Brewmaster (hmm got a first name?) Thanks for the advice. I removed the round inspection plate within the engine bay (drivers side) to try and look at the hose that runs from the filler nozzle to the tank. It looks in good condition, I did feel that the clamp at the bottom of the hose to the tank was not  tight, I could spin with my fingers so maybe this is the issue. When the tank is full it may have a small leak into the wheel arch because the smell is worse in the drivers side rear seat. I will try and get it tight on the weekend, gives me time to figure out how to get my gorilla hands in there with a screwdriver. The engine is brand new and all the hoses are new and clamped from the tank to the carbs, so I don't think this is the issue. Last thing I want is a fire so I will also get it checked next service.

Cheers

hi have you cheked the short hoses joining the breather tubes in the engine bay  . there is one eace side going up towards the air intake scoops
Deano

Check the o ring under the fuel gauge sender unit. BUT only if there is an access hole to it. You would need to cut one if not and be reasonable sure it was leaking there  before you started in on it.

The fuel sender unit is in the top of the tank so might explain the smell when full.
