FIRE PROOFING YOUR KOMBIFireproofing your Kombi is very important and this is not meant to frighten anybody . Kombis are quite safe and this is worth knowing.

Cheers!

This is a link from the Aircooled Konnection in UK. The one most seem to be using in their Kombis costs £150 or around $350- they are similar to racecar onboard extinguisher though are automatic.

One of the reasons why i would highly recommend getting some sort of fire protection.
Yes it WAS my bus....

That would break your heart- the only plus is I assume no one was hurt.

That's awful. I'd be gutted... it looks like it was a great vehicle.
One of my great kombi fears - scary...

My first kombi was destroyed by fire after the extinguisher failed... I think 2 fire extinguishers should be the minimum carried (in a large fire one probably isn't enough, anyway). They can be bought cheaply at most auto stores... I think I might buy another pair after looking at those pix. I probably should buy some fuel line and circlips, too...

Yeah it was a great panel van and luckily no one was hurt. The bus lived most of its life in Adelaide, owned by a piano tuner, so was never really worked that hard either.....
I had a fire extinguisher and managed to put the fire out inside the engine bay, but realised that the petrol had dripped onto the tarmac under the van and this just relit the van back into flames. Gutted i was.
Honestly people. Fit either one of them complete engine bay fire safe systems or have at least 2 large extinguishers in the van at all times.
My van would still be on the road if i had carried 2 extinguishers.

I look forward to the reply, as it sounds a great idea.... however, this site suggests that prices start at $2000:

They can be far cheaper than that- this one would do engine bay-fuel tank area and cabin to protect driver.
Probably someone on forum may know how to make one.
My race car had one with connection to extinguisher and leads to engine bay etc and was set off by solenoid switch- a big red button.

FireHi All
Im supprised i havent seen Phillia in here as i have supplied one for him. Maybe it has not been fitted yet as i too am waiting on pictures.
This system is a FireFlex. 1kg bottle with horizontal mounting or verticle mounting available. Fitting is simple as it requires the bottle to be mounted then just run the 4m flex hose across the engine bay headliner a couple of times. The hose will heat up and melt at the Hot spot and hopefully extinguish the fire before it generates too much heat. I have also been looking at a Specific built system for kombis with Warning lights on the dash and remote switching as well. There is a guy near me who builds simple systems used on the Touring Cars and are Cams Approved.
If there was enough interest i could get busier on it.
Thanks Jamie

im interested jamie...whats the likely price of one of these fire flex's???

Hi Archeress
The cost for the Fireflex system is $780.00. They can be ordered if needed. I corrected myself in the earlier message. I quoted a 3meter Trace but it is actually 4meters. They come in 1kg Horizontal mounts and Vertical mounts. Bigger sizes might be available soon.
Thanks Jamie
