Docs BusHello there
This is the current project on at the moment. This bus has come to me at the Gold Coast from down in NSW. The kombi goes by the name Marley and has been sent to me to change some of its apperance and also give it a Kustom camper interior.
I must apologise for the next photo as the boss poked her head in to say hi

Laila the paid model, every time that Marley goes out gorgeous female models just have to be photographed with her

PicsHere are some more pics with what had to be removed and now in the plan stage to fit everything in.
Now to all you out there this is what you shouldnt do.The problem with this is that over a period of time you will crush the cable and then you will possibly have intermitant issues with your stereo. As you can see there are some RCA leads that are very sensitive which dont like to be stood on and crushed as well as power supply which could rub through and blow a fuse.It may be the easier way but in the long run will be a pain in the bottom!!!!

SpecialYou got that one right about the beautiful women. I think Laila is beautifull too.

Hi All
Here are som more pics of Phillias Bus
The seat totally removed
The seat had a slight problem that when you sat in it the back pushed you forward. With some major modification it was fixed.
BEFORE
AFTER
As you can see the base now has a slight slant bank as too does the back
Here is the new floor
Slowly coming together

Hi All
More progress on Docs Bus
Here is a mock up template of the rear bulk head that Doc would like.It will be having a door on it to access some extra storage.
Doc has decided to go a new headliner so down come the New/Old one.
As you can see here the windows had to come out to remove the headliner and to re-fit it later when it is ready.
Here is a sample of the material up against the floor

timber to metal ???Very nice camper, love the wheels, are they empis??
I would be a bit concerned about timber straight to the floor though. Timber has a moisture content of up to 20% when bought off the shelf, due to its absorption rate, it will naturally soak up moisture whether its from a surface or airborne, a bit like a sponge.
Metal on the other hand, due to its witholding temperature, will 'sweat' or condensate on the inside surface, which if unable to breath will form Mould growth and become damp and smelly.
Because of a campers use, there is quite a bit of moisture/condensation.
Therefore it is advisory to fit a layer of water resistant, breathable, faom in between, to form a barrier.
Also the sound transference from metall is quite high. Although timber can be a sound absorber to a minimal degree, it can resonate which acts as a body to transfer noise and will often increase it (a bit like a gramaphone). Again the faom will act as a sound deadener.
How do I know?? I was a building products advisory consultant for ISO
If you want the material name, thickness and density please let me know

Welcome Dormo72- guess you may have a Dormobile.
These are pics recently taken of the floor of a 1973 Sopru camper which was converted from new. Sopru were first official approved VW campers in Australia.
Apart from discolouration in parts of orginal vinyl it was in good condition.
The timber floor was also spot on and will be put back.
The photos show slats between timber and floor . Floor had not been cleaned but just as was when cupboards and timber floor removed
|
dormo72
|
The timber slats were fitted to provide cross airflow, thus reducing condensation, mould growth and rot
The timber floor in the Blue kombi is laid straight onto the floor, only asking for trouble in the future

|
Hi Dormo
Just to keep you informed you are actually incorrect in assuming what i have done!!!! If you want to ask me anything or have an opinion i dont have a problem with that, but you would want to be correct before you say anything. I too put slats down for airflow to prevent rot. The photos i have taken dont show you that.
To all
there will be more pics and some changes this week. Phillia has lengthened his shopping list
Cheers Jamie

Whoops, I meant to reply to this earlier! - I also noticed there was nothing in the photos to suggest that there were no slats put down! Thanks Jamie for clearing that up.
I remember reading somewhere that foam is actually a bad idea as it is porous and helps retain water close to the metal; it is better to allow the wood to absorb the moisture instead. (Slats would therefore help keep the moisture in the floor and separated from the metal.) This makes some sense to me so have always accepted it, but I am happy to hear about information suggesting otherwise.
I am definitely looking forward to hearing more about Philia's shopping list...

Wow...i feel like ive been here before... I await in anticipation for philias inner refurbishment...i know its going to be fantastic. You have some great wraps(raps?) jamie.
|
Philia
|
Hi guys
In truth I didn't reply to Dormos post on two reasons
1.) I have faith in Jamies work
2.) The rippled floor must provide some ventilation as the accumulation of dust will atest if you have ever pulled up a floor.
It certainly not a flat surface of metal bonded to flat wood
Anyhoo welcome Dormo72 the wheels are Empis
Continuing the refurbishment......
Currently don't want to give details of further BLING until we know its available and can be done.
Somethings are just replacements as thirty year old mechanisms are just worn. Others are mods for pure eye Candy.........I have discussed some with friends who don't necesarrily agree but have been polite enough not to tell me I'm silly (I Thank you)......
Enough to say there are some engine mods I am looking at.......
|
The archeress
|
Philia?.....i look at it this way....we are all getting older and i have no doubt our buses will out live us all. Do what you want...Bling till your blind and refurbish refurbish, refurbish....Its a short life and we must do what makes us happy or keeps us motivated and alive. We should of course always..ALWAYS...have our opinions...yep...definately...it s a short life...If i had a decent income i know for sure that bonnie would have even more bling. Hey i met "the busrider" the other day and his 4 kids just climbed all over bonnie with many wows...People seem to do this...lol...its a good feeling for me and for those that "feel"the fur.

Campervan CrisisSo is this series your resto inspiration? I would have thought "Pimp My Ride" was closer!
I have only downloaded the first part so far (several months back) and in it they started turning a tired splittie into a hot samba, good stuff... IIRC, each episode is under half an hour long and you can fit three eps to a CD... thanks for reminding me, I wanted to download some more!

Progress PicsHi there all
Here are some progress pics for you.
This is the rear storage compartment in its raw state. Will be sent away to be 2Pak soon
The 2 burner/grill awaiting to be fitted
Here is abit of a mock up to see the general layout so far. I have replaced the vinyl kick under the RNR with a polished piece. Made the small table which will sit into a flush fitting to the floor as well as a tripod leg attachment so that you can use your table outside the bus. As you can also see the main cabinet has started to be set out.
In the next picture i have made a spot for the table to sit so it is not just flying around the kombi while driving.
Cheers for now Jamie

But who knows what he will do next.....He's probably waiting for more photos of Marley...He is a pretty impulsive guy

Hi There All
Here is a bit of an update. Not too much building side of things this week so far but allot of cables and cables and cables. As anyone who has done this type of installations you can appreciate the time involved in planning and running cables. Once you have covered it in split loom and zip tied it all up the last thing you want is to find that you forgot one.
Here is a pic of what i swept out from under the car when running the cables. Was about 50 odd zip ties and about 30m of split loomand cable.
TIP: When you plan to do your own wiring, just make sure that you think about all avenues and wouldnt hurt to think about possible additions later on. Highly recommended to leave the 240v to the specialists. 12v will blow a fuse but incorrect 240v could blow allot more!!! Allot of people just use the same fittings and cable as your household but some of that is not allowed. All power points are different.
Any way time to stop rambling, back to Docs Bus.
Battery charger, inverter and power point fitted under his RNR
Inverted mounted flush with the face panel under RNR
Docs original passive sub reinstalled under RNR
Cabinet installed with switch panel fitted
Can anyone now tell me what the red and black wires are suspose to do???
Oh The switch sitting in the middle of the floor is for the TV lifter which by the way now does go up and down the way it should.
Here is the reason why i say just think about everything before you get to carried away. All this cabiling is for the down lights, rear speakers and tv aerial. I also had to change the monitor/rear view mirror for the reversing camera which has turned into a new bracket and adaptor that i had to fabricate. The new headliner is going in tomorrow so all this has to be done before you get to far. You will make a mess of things if you do it the wrong way
Now to all. I was talking to the doc the other day and Philia you are right. He too spoke to me about the Porsche fan shroud and injection. I heard about his new purchase so im waiting for him to post the pics. Guess he is waiting for it to make its way to his place before he shows all of us.
Maybe he should bolt the Kadrons onto his 76 and save the Porsche housing for his 19**. OPPS almost let the cat out of the bag.
Will keep you posted
Thanks Jamie
PS Did we mention about the alltitude adjustment we need to make???

Hi All
Now back to the Docs Bus.
Here is some of the progress today and as you can see, like i said in a previous post, it is so important to set all your wiring out first. Wether it is on paper or in your head. From the pics you will be able to see how confusing it can be.
The new front speakers were fitted
The new headliner turned up for a trial fit
I noticed a problem with the front windscreen seal today.
Only jokes. If anyone has done a new headliner before, they will know that the front windscreen should come out. Even though the seal was brand new it is safer to cut the seal out instead of trying to pop the screen out. The cost of a new seal is better than the cost of a new windscreen.
I hope that all the detail im listing is helping others out there planing on doing there own.
Back to it tomorrow. Hopefully headliner and windscreen will all be fitted again.
Thanks Jamie

Installing water pumpsNow i thought i might show everyone how i fit water pumps.
1. Find a good position for the pump and drill the appropiate holes.
2. Now i dont just use screws to secure the pump as it has the potential to come loose. As the feet on the pump are rubber mounted you dont want to over tighten with screws or have them loose. What i use is a special tool called NutSert. Basically it is like a big pop rivet with a nut on the back. This way you bolt it on and apply some loctite. You can get the right amount of pressure on the feet without over tightening.
3. Now the pump has been bolted in.
4. When wiring in the pump you should always use heat shrink connectors under the vehicle, this way all moisture can be kept out. Any connection at all open to the elements should have heat shrink connectors used to keep the circuit reliable.
Hope this has been informative for the novices out there.
Thanks Jamie

Hi All
Now back to some updates on the Docs Bus.
Some of you may have already seen it at the Gold Coast club show at the Riviera complex. It certainly did grab some interest.
Here is the new headliner fitted to the pot top with the new stays fitted for the hatch. The one fitted hung down low and you always took your head out on it.
The new canvas being fitted
The canvas now fitted and trimmed off. Notice the cable at the rear? It is for the tv aerial to be mounted on the pop top
Looking on the inside
Fitting the fridge. Now thats where you want to make sure your measurements are right!!!
Windscreen back in
I had to modify the sunvisor to suit the new reverse camera monitor/ rear vision mirror. Notice the matching fabric. Just adds to that special touch. That was not fun to wire up as the original camera and monitor were not compatable but with alittle bit of wiring it now works perfect.
That Marley attracting Beautifull girls again at the Gold Coast Show.
If you are wondering were the table pole will go well there is a place for everything. Also you may notice the finger hole in the front edge of the base. It makes it much easier to pull the bed into position. You will see that happen alot more now.
Now i hope that keeps you all updated. I must appolagise for the delay as my computer had a heart attach and the doctor was to far away to fix it, but as you guessed its all good now.
Thanks Jamie

Hi All Again
I was going to post a Docs Bus Part 2, as i felt that the Dial Up users may have a problem with all the pictures, but as it is almost over i didnt want to split it now. I hope that is ok for everyone viewing. This Post has had rather alot of views and is growing in interest. For the next project i will start it off as a part 1 just in case if it too gets too big. Keep an eye out as it is an interesting one and its not a camper.
Another day at the office and we are finally nearing the end. Just checking on a few of the electrical devices before they get sealed in.
We are playing music here through the computer and LCD and i have also have intergrated it into the head unit (Radio) so you can listen to your music or DVD through your stereo system.
Here is some MORE plumbing. The water pump is now plumbed and i have also added a ball valve so you can back fill you water tank from underneath. By doing this it saves putting fillers on the outside of your vehicle or inside through the floor like the old days.
The rear storage compartment now has the door and catch fitted and also you can see the lights and speakers fitted.
The drivers side cabinet now complete and just needs buffing.
I have been focusing this week on all the final touches so i will be making the swing out cupboard last. Will be starting that on wednesday.
Thank you all for your interest and coments so far.
Thanks Jamie

It's just as well they designed the kombi for easy engine maintenance... imagine how frustrating it would be otherwise!
I find the limited access to the batteries annoying - I am thinking of making a dentist-style mirror-on-a-stick so I can easily check the battery fluid level. Our 72 doesn't have an overhead access hatch either, so I have my fingers crossed that we don't have a starter-motor failure...

Are they really that bad?
As I figure the one in the picture is just a 009 with a few fancy/schmanzy knobs and dials.
I did play around with springs and limmitters but it was really to get it to run as well as the 05 not better.

This is another link on stock and other distributors

The 09 is not progressive advance -just centrifugal- these type of dizzies are used on lightweight cars like hot beetles or buggies with no weight and rev to 6000+.
The advance on these dizzies do not match the torque or power curve of the Type 4 motor and with the weight of a Kombi/camper this adds to the effect.
Try it by all means but make sure you have an original to put back.

Oh the pain ..... the bruises ..... and the concussion!I can not tell you as to the bruises I received as I was thrown around the back seat of Otis photographing Marley ........ need I tell you that Toni J was driving and ever since we got our 72 Beetle she has been known to drive like she stole the car rather than test it!
Glad to see some haapy snaps up on the KK.
Cheers

Can I just gloat and say I have had the good fortune to have sat in the back of Marley for an hour when Doc and Kombiwidow were up on holidays in Caloundra in April.
Met for a beer or two then went and sat in Marley in the garage of the place they were staying.
Jamie ..... it was a time to fully understand and appreciate the craftmanship that you put into doing this interior. We also caught the pride in both Doc's and KW's explanation and modelling of everything that opens and shuts in Marley.
I would like to suggest to you all that this interior is fantastic and everything is even better viewing in the flesh. The pictures do not really capture the real the full story.
A magnificance job guys. Well done
Cheers
