Cylinder Heat Temp (CHT) gauges and detectionOil temperate of an aircooled motor is one thing, but Cylinder Head Temp (CHT) is another and is a beter indication of how hot your aircooled motor is running as these two mediums are not always related.
Has anyone done much research into CHT sensoring for VW's? In particular for a Kombi? I tried to find out what was available on the aircooledtechnology.com website. But most of the input was from guys with 914 porsches etc and I want to install CHT gauges for my 75 bay Kombi with a type 4 motor. The problem I'm having is where the gauge is to be installed in a kombi dash is a long way from the motor and the cables supplied with most CHT gauges are only long enough for a beatle etc. The cable for CHT gauges is specailised and it's not a case of extending with some copper wire.
On top of this, there is temp compensated gauges and non temp compensated. Temp compensated gauges means that no matter how much the cabin temp changes where the gauge is located, the gauge still reads accurate CHT. Digital Dakota is a quality American brand of Temp compensated CHT gauge. But it is a digital display instead of a needle type like a VDO CHT gauge which just happens to be non temp conpensated. I was all set to go with the VDO type but then I couldn't find anyone willing to supply the correct length cable for use in a Kombi. I know these are available as there are Kombis in the US and Europe with CHT gauges installed.
Thinking about it now, I might just go with the Digital Dakota gauge as it can be supplied with the right length of cable and is Temp compensated, just it will look crap in my dash board with all needle gauges.
Any ideas / input would be apprecaited

Phylia wrote and article somewhere and you may also find it in Members Photos under Docs' Bus.
Unless you are running big bore, hi-lift cam and all the goodies there is not much reason to have CHT readings.
If stock motor is in good condition, clean, all tinware and seals in place it will run within correct range.

I'm running high lift and longer duration cam as well as a stroker crank. Bore is standard. I'm also running twin 40mm DCNF carbies which do help the heads to run a little cooler. In winter my engine oil temp runs cooler than standard on a cold night (below 85 degs). However, in summer I think the head temps might be exceeding 400degs which will lead to early failure. I have a made up fuel injection set up which I want to install once I've settled on which engine management system I want controlling it. I'm not sure if this will effect CHT temps much.

You have a reason CHT measurement is worth it but make sure you have top instruments and connections.
