Brewmaster's Wilfred .... the notorious canine 74 SC UteHave yet to post any pics of the kombi dearest to my heart the rather notorious Wilfred. .... the 74 SC Ute with attitude .....
Now Wilfred has been off the road lately with some head trouble. Pulled off the road in January and we have been waiting to get him up to Geoff the mechanic In Maryborough where he will get some new heads and be converted over to gas!
Trying to get a space on a car carrier going north is nigh on impossible so last weekend we bit the bullet and hired a car carrier to do the job!
Now Wilfred is named after the infamous and rather quirky SBS TV series of the same name ..... WILFRED.
WILFRED, the series, is an in-depth portrait of such a pet ‘behaving badly’.
If Harry’s Practice has taught us anything, it’s that the domestic pet can have as many psychological hang-ups as its contemporary owner. Depression, anxiety, loneliness and fear of abandonment all lead to behavioural problems and an unstable home environment.
Here is Wilfred in the garage with Vera the 72 Beetle.
Wilfred being put onto the car carrier the first time ..... wrong weight distribution forced a change.

Now Wilfred's personality is questionable .....Now Wilfred's personality is questionable ..... at the best of times!
I have never seen a vehicle assume the personality of his TV character but he has!
For those who don't know the TV series Wilfred is the ultimate flawed character. Like David Brent in The Office, we are charmed by his arrogance and self-righteousness, his falsehoods and misguided passions. Insecure and manipulative, he will stop at nothing to win the love and affection he desires. Although his methods may sometimes be underhand, his innocence and purity of heart can never be questioned. Well, maybe sometimes. He has a lot of love to give and expects a lot in return. And he won’t let any one stand in his way of getting what he sees as his.
More about Wilfred on http://www21.sbs.com.au/wilfred/ Believe me if you have ever seen it it is just wrong! No other way to put it!
Well Wilfred the SC Ute has had an interesting life.
Up until February last year Wilfred had been owned by Gary of Conti Engines of Bribie Island who ran the local VW Exchange Engine Service in SE Qld. Often adverises in VWMA and some of you may have see his ads.
Wilfred was Gary's work ute and his record was 6 or 7 VW engines boucing around the back of the ute. Our old mechanic told us that they would almost literally drop engines down into the tray of Wilfred to take them back to Bribie for Gary to do them up to his chillie ratings.
Found him on ebay and shot down to Bribie and bought him that evening.
The tray and gates were battered, the seats especially the drivers seat was shot and he had the lovely Conti Racing colours of a navy blue with stone guard on the bottom two feet on the panels. Great one Gary!
The front view at Gary's workshop and ebay pics. Quite small too as you can see.

So just over 12 months ago we started to draw up a list!So just over 12 months ago we started to draw up a list!
1. Have Wilfred checked over by our mechanic Wayne from VeeDub Mechanical at Buderim. Sadly "Wayne's World" just closed at the end of April leaving a real void in the market.
2. Seats to be rebuilt and reupholstered by Sheldon Pearce. Black with white piping as well as door cards, kick panels, floor mat etc .....
3. Empi Quickshift Gear stick and Hot Dog Exhaust. Empi Quickshifter easily fitted but old original exhaust had to be cut off with a grinder and using a plumber's chisel splitting the last bolt on each side! What an epic!

The seats came out nicely. Nice work!

UpholsterySheldon Pearce is a local upholsterer who main source of business is aircraft interiors at the Caloundra Airport.
A SC Ute does not cost as much as the interior of an aircraft.
But the boys loved doing something a little different. Plans are for a torneau cover for the tray

Muffler change..... ?One of the next things we would like to do is to change the Hot Dog exhaust over to an Empi one.
Toni's72 Beetle has the sweetest sound from a Empi GT twin tip exhaust.
We would like something like that but it looks like we will have to settle on an Empi twin tip exhaust. Although if anyone has any alternative suggestions you are more than welcome to post it here. After a sweet but loud sound.

Is Wilfred a type 4 motor (1700 to 2000cc) or a type 1 like the 1600cc? The 2 tip GT Exhaust System - type 2/4 is not good for performance on the type 4 motor. Visit www.aircooledtechnology.com for good info on the type 4 motor and to learn about what is good & bad for these motors. Jake at Aircooled Technology has been testing an exhaust purpose built for the type 4 Kombi motor. Apparently it sounds real sweet and performance has been great when dyno tested too.
If I'm correct, the Thunder Bird system you have is about the best performance for your money in this country at the moment. I have one on my 2109cc Type 4 motor in my Kombi at the moment. You can change from the hotdog to a muffler which is available. But the sound might not be what you are looking for. I'm waiting for Jake's system to be available soon.

Thanks Phat Bus for the heads up on achieving the soundThanks Phat Bus for the heads up on achieving the sound of the The 2 tip GT Exhaust System with a Type 4 2 litre engine.
Any idea on when Jake's exhaust for the Type 4 motor will be ready?
Would love to see some photos of Jake's exhaust! Off now to check www.aircooledtechnology.com to check out the exhaust
Is this the one you mean?
A-1 Header
Made in the USA!
This system is amazing. Not very many times does any newly developed product make this type of statement. The fit and finish is great, especially for the price and the system bolted right on with no beating and banging. Since it has a set of stub pipes, just like the Tangerine it allows us the ability to more efficiently match exhaust ports for accurate flow and margins. The system fits any standard Beetle, or Ghia and we have other systems in development that will attain the same collector and runner lengths, but will be made to fit Early Type II and Type 3 vehicles outfitted with the Powerplant of the Future- The Type IV.
The Performance of this system speaks for it’s self. Nothing came within 9 HP of it! This header is 100% designed and tuned and its numbers illustrate that.

Hi Brewmaster,
The exhaust you've shown is not the one. But it is made by the same company who are to make the new Type 4 bus exhaust. If your looking on his forum you'll find a post on it under in the Engine Shop section under Exhausts and also there is another post showing Dyno out put in the Dyno Room reserach section. Lots of good Type 4 motor info on his forum.

Wilfred is RW'ed and Rego'ed alreadyHey Jamie
Wilfred is RW'ed and Rego'ed already. We are just doing him panel by panel at the moment but we lost momentum when he went off the road due to the heads.
Seems after talking to Geoff at Klubfest on the weekend that Wilfred may have been drivable all this time but will he will drop the engine to see how much work need to be done on hime.
Seems like there are so many twists and turns on the Wilfred journey and the coresponding options we could take at each step that we have to take little steps just to see what direction we're heading.
Saw him at Geoff's last night but that's another long-winded story of Col and Geoff-like proportions that saw me arrive home from Klubfest after 6.30 pm and leave again at 9.00 pm and return home via Maryborough at 3.30am.
Oh God I'm shagged!
But the PUB run up the coast sounds a good idea in the utes.
Currently looking into an exhaust that runs 4 pipes into one that goes out into 2 again to get that rich gurgling GT sound we have on Vera the 72 Beetle.
Cheers

Wilfred's gas updateWell Wilfred preparartion for gas has already started.
Here is what Geoff had already planned before he dropped the engine this week
Do some headwork to open it up a little.
New Billet Camshaft
Special Lifters
Dual Throat Planem Manifold taking it from 98mm out to 105mm
Work on the case and or crank still to be determined once he drops Wilfred's engine.
Basically we are getting new heads a Geoff "Basic" recondition and having gas installed.
Can't wait until we can have the old dog back ...... he will have a spring in his step and plenty of gas in his rear end!
Hope to talk with Geoff sometime over the weekend to see how the mongrel is going!
Cheers
