AUSTRALIA'S FASTEST KOMBI - WIN $10 000!!HI Guys
Hoping you can help us, could you please put the word out to your members/users about an exciting new online TV show Heavy is producing to find “Australia’s fastest Kombi”.
We’re looking for one team to represent their state and build a Kombi van from scratch, source parts and get it to Sydney mid September to take the time trial at Sydney Dragway. The fastest van and winning team will receive $10,000 in cash and get to keep the van. So if you’re keen to enter you club, think “Top Gear meets “American Chopper” where State vs state, man vs machine, kombi vs the clock !!
The competition starts at the end of July, in which teams have 6 weeks to tinker with the vans and participate in the Sydney time trial on week Seven. Each team will be allocated video camera’s, phones, internet cards and laptops to film the restoration, and the journey spent in coming to Sydney right up to the race day.
Some competition rules are;
· Heavy will provide each team a $10,000 budget to purchase a van, source parts and travel
· All vans must not be newer than 1975 model, have 2.0L engines and teams can only use traditional and standard parts.
· Each team must have a minimum of 5 team members in which at least one must be female
· Each team must provide a secure workshop/garage to work and store the van throughout the competition
· Teams must provide 30 minutes of footage each week to Heavy to produce a weekly show on www.Heavy.com. Footage will include teams sourcing the vans and parts, working on the vans, testing it, dealing with issues etc.. using a team member that has some filming and camera experience is a plus.
· The vans must be presented dent free and painted for the time trial at Sydney Dragway. Teams must display their team names and logo on the side of the van
· Each team must appoint a team captain who is responsible for that team adhering to all the competition rules.
Please contact Nathan Ruff on Nathan.ruff@heavy.com or 0410 608 329 with any interested participants. Heavy.com will be meeting and casting next week, so there is not time to lose!

Have seen your posts on other Forums and one of our members has already posted link from AVD.
Questions- 1. What rules re Kombi Mods
Can they be lightened?
Can they be lowered?
2. Do you have to stay at 2 litres?
3.What are rules on wheels and tyres?
Are slicks allowed?
4. Who is getting licence to conduct event at
Sydney Dragway?
5. Can you have sponsors?
I think it is better to answer and provide info on forum rather than individual phone calls or e-mails

When I read "must be dent free and painted" I realised that there was $10k in just to acheive that in itself. I was a bit confused by the pre 1975 requirement too, yet 2ltr requirement.

Apparentlyt there's a south African guy in Perth with a 440Hp turbo 2ltr type 4 motor which was built and blue printed by himself. This motor was 1st in his beetle then he put it into a rail and now it's been slightly de-tuned and is going back into his beetle again after the rail hit the wall at a meet. Most of his work and racing was done back in S. Africa. Maybe he might be keen to join in??

The response on most forums where "heavy" has posted has been at the least "underwhelming" and he hasn't replied to any queries.

I think "Heavy" was just getting the message out and probably not intending to visit again.
I think he figures that people will contact him.
Don't forget that "they" will own the bus and whatever motor goes into it at the end so I don't think people would be too keen to donate a blueprinted motor.
But if someone was keen to donate a blueprinted motor I can think of a few people that would love it

Aren't these sort of whacky things normally for charity? Like trekking through Nepal etc and mountain biking in Mexico

I think it'd be a lot of fun. and even if it just saves 1 more kombi from the great junkyard in the sky, it'd be worth it.
I also like racing things

Slight mod to your post Jon but I doubt whether this will ever get off the ground. There is no organising permit to run at a licenced drag strip.
Having been involved at all levels of motorsport for many years this is not how you go organising an event/

It seems to be disapperaing down the pages of most forum.
There is a post on AVD concerning this rule
"• At all times the Kombi vans remain the property of Heavy (with the exception of the winning Kombi after the time trial) and in the event of an occurrence that renders a Kombi van of no use to Heavy, at the sole discretion of Heavy, the relevant team participants will be equally liable to reimburse Heavy the $10,000 or part thereof. "
So you spend their $10,000-they own the Kombi but "at their discretion" if they don't want it you give their $10,000 back.
Your little bit of work is worth nothing. They must be all "teenyboppers" or on something

Though a lot of people were bagging the idea, i thought it sounded like a great opportunity to give making a good engine combo a go. I can't justify throwing 5k at my bus, but i'd love to try and see if i could pull something together within the time limit.
I had got a few friend interested, it'll be a shame if we aren't allowed to give it a shot. Lucky i did't go buy the guys 72' that's for sale.
