1968 pop up camper - My first Bay!

Well I have had just about every Aircooled vehicle made by VW over the past 30 years I have owned them and gone to events. But a Baywindow was never on my list to buy.

But I found my way to your website and forum here and have to say that following all the threads on your buses and how they started and then how awesome they looked when done convinced me to sell my bug and get a bus.

Well today I made my down payment on a nice 1968 popup camper bus owned by a 85 yr old woman that has sat since she lost her license 10 years ago.

I don't have it yet as it is being shipped to me from about 3 hours away so I am like a kid before xmas planning the project and shopping for parts!

Here is photos from the samba ad and from sellar.

Is this what the call a SUNDIAL camper?

It is very straight and I can wax the paint and go with it for awhile. The only dent is drivers side back corner down low below the bumper. Not bad!

New engine with 1,000 miles when parked. New seats etc. No rust under windshield and floors so easy to fix up.

My project plans:

4" narrowed beam (air ride possibly need to research first)
Wheels and tires (Fuchs are my first choice) might have to throw on my BRMs for now
Install Berg Locking shifter I already have for it
Lower rear stance
Install sound system
Roof rack behind popup
tint back 5 windows
custom steering wheel

and they will do me for awhile so I can enjoy it this summer going to events. I go to most of the west coast Bug O Rama's and Bug In etc covering them for my website http://www.ultimateaircooled.com. So I have to haul lots of camping gear and camera equipment so needed the room.

Anyone know what type of pop up this is? I see lots of Westys and Dormobiles, etc but not many of this small square type pop up. Help?

Then in the next winter I want to add the disc brakes and a whole lot of other updates.

I can't wait to add to my thread here and show you all the progress.

As soon as it arrives I will take more detailed photos and post them.

Please feel free to message me and visit my website also. Good people there and no drama!

Wow, and that is not a poptop you ever see in Australia...

Well done on getting a 68 - there's not many of them left (compared to other bay years), and it is the oldest of the bays.... it looks great... I would love a 68, which is the year of my birth - but I suspect I will never be able to find a good one....  have fun, and enjoy your find... Smile

G'Day mate from Perth West australia.
What a beautifull Bay you have found.
It is always interesting to know about the history of your new "adopted child", thanks for the news.
I love the reversing lights and the under door indicators, we do not see them in Australia.
This is a great forum and we love to see the thread of news and photos.
Best regards
Ruby Dear ('71 low light bay )
