Another Kombi looks like being lost- repairs may be too costly.
Owned for many years by one owner and serviced by same VW mechanic for 15 years except for last three due to distance.
Most likely fuel lines fell off, had deteriorated , or even brass fitting on carb/s may have worked loose.
It is cheap insurance to change your fuel lines every 12 months as they withstand a lot of heat, road dirt etc.
No one was hurt.
The Fire Brigade thought it was magnesium engine, on which you can't use water- everything now full of dirt and gravel.

What a damn shame!
Having read Schomburgers sticky on avoiding fires in the engine compartment of Kombis I was a bit nervous to see that I had a petrol leak coming from the connection to the tank and the fuel filter. Got that fixed very quickly.
