As Woger has been seeming a little down on power (well, more than usual... ) and has been doing the occasional small backfire, I decided it might be time to check the vacuum hoses. I noticed a split in one of the elbows connecting the air shroud to the left carbie's idle intake....
However, I also found a fair amount of scum on the inside of the pipe... black like oil, but with a faint smell of petrol.
I have replacement elbows, and the pipe will be easily cleaned out.. but is this a sign of a potentially greater problem, or is this not uncommon? _________________ ....Woz
I also examined the hose coming from the oil breather - when compressed, oil squeezed out onto my fingers suggesting it is also due for replacement....
Woger had his front disks replaced last year, but he recently hasn't been as keen to stop... I thought it may have been the front shocks, but looking at the pic above the brake-booster hose is splitting (top centre)... I will try cutting and reattaching the line and see if the braking distance shortens.
Mmmm, a bit of a mess...
I am concerned about anything that is a potential fire hazard... unfortunately, while I have plenty of 3.5mm hose, I don't yet have any 12mm... _________________ ....Woz

Woger has a few quirks.. one of which is that he only has one automatic choke! I know there is some debate about the chokes (John Muir, for example, recommends disconnecting them...) - but I am sure this isn't the best compromise!
Left carb with automatic choke connected:
Right carb without:
I think it might be best if I remove the left choke. _________________ ....Woz
There is only one choke on type 4 motors and that is left one- also major adjustments are only on left carb. They are not interchangeable from L to R or vica versa.
CORRECTION- Chokes on both sides but only left has fuel cut off- and idle speed is pre set and blocked off but left hand carb still has idle speed adjustment due to fule cut off on that carb.
Experts can now make sense out of this.

I am baffled then - what is that on the right carb, and why did Woger's mechanic point it out as needing repair?
Cool, no repairs required then! That's what I want to hear.... _________________ ....Woz

Have corrected my first post- was having seniors pause.
Perhaps your right hand choke not wired up.

The wires are there... I might try joining it up then and see what happens. (I wonder if it is only disconnected due to the broken connector...?)
Well, the left carbie at least seems to be wired up correctly; I assume the mechanics have ignored the right carb as it is "less important". Thanks Warren! _________________ ....Woz
The cracked elbow and fuel/oil mix is a result of the total connections between both sides of motor having to be tight and not leaking or really sucking air.
The pipe that runs across rear of engine connects to brake vacuum line and inlet into head near No3.
If pipe is disconnected or "leaking' it turns engine into its original concept- a very good pump.
It will pump oil, and waste fuel, as No 3 will not fire correctly, everywhere and make a real mess.
It will also give zero reading on No 3 when you do compression test so all these lines should be checked regularly- at least do it once a year when fuel lines should be checked.
Always check these elbows, pipes and connecting hoses if you get zero compression before you pull motor

Mmm, there'll be no point doing a compression test then until I replace the hoses... I had never replaced them (in the 22 months since I bought Woger - and who knows how long before then?) so I was suspicious anyway.
Too easy! It looks like another inexpensive fix/improvement - just the way I love it!
Well, I'll reconnect everything and then head back to Volscourt for some 12mm hose (and buy spare).... I had to collect some exhaust pipe gaskets anyway (but more on that in a later post!) _________________ ....Woz

woz, i got splits in those elbows too, i just wrapped electrical tape around them, it made a whole lot of difference. if you have any spares, i would like to purchase them of you. its a bit hard here in the mount to find spares. have to go to the city.
