This is very important to know..believe me.. if i had of known i may not be in my current predicament with bonnie running hot.

In your engine bay floor on the left...and on the right there are two round holes bigger than a jam jar lid. here are two photos with arrows...you will not see the holes because they have now been covered over.
Left side....

Why do these need covering up?...Let me tell you why they should be..
They needed to be covered up because these holes provide heat rise for the heater boxes.....but there are soo many of us that do NOT have the heaters connected any more.
Therefore heat comes up from your exhaust system into the engine bay and gets sucked into the engine thru the fan housing....AND WE DO NOT NEED ANY EXTRA HEAT GETTING INTO THE ENGINE THAT DOESNT NEED TO BE.

BUT....THERE ARE BIGGER ISSUES AFOOT....SUCH AS.....TWO MORE HOLES THAT WILL NEED COVERING....
These two rectangular holes i am talking about are on the left side and the right side of the fan housing.
this is a fan housing. Grey arrow on right shows the housing.
White arrow on left shows air intake. It sucks air in to cool your engine.

Here are the holes i am talking about...If you lay down under your bus near the bumper and look up...you will see a hole...This hole has been covered like in this photo.. I should also point out...that these WERE holes...and now my mechanic has covered them...as they should be covered IF there is no heating system.

A closer view.

Same hole and cover up on other side also...
So basically...if you dont cover these two holes then you are losing prob 50% of your intake as it is wizzing out left and right....
Sorta like trying to blow up a balloon with two small holes in it...
All in all...my engine was running about 30 degrees hotter than it normally should...what with timing at 26 degrees and brake booster non functioning and no chokes to be seen all added up to a hot and rattly engine that is in the process of shaking itself to bits slowly...However...all that will soon be addressed.

THE END.

In your second photo where you can see the allen bolt to adjust your alt. there is a plastic cover for that area also. VW engines Inhale from the top and exhale underneath, no communication between the 2 should happen for a cool running engine. Great post. Same goes for the Type 1 upright engine, if you have no heater boxes and no heat tubes from the fan housing theu you need to cover the fan housing extentions ( I've seen Coke cans cut and clamped over) and then the holes in the Breastplate need to be covered as well. ( 2 Tuna can lids with a hole drilled in the center, sandwiched on the hole with a nut and bolt holding them in place works well.
